This dates from 1961 - early in the Evans canon. It has the sublime Scott LaFaro on bass - the bass that launched a thousand discs. His playing is simply stunning. The repertoire consists of show tunes - some of Evans own compositions came later. But the recording comes up very fresh. Recording is clear - drums come off best and the playing is inventive and subtle. Bass is a little quiet and the piano is rather wooden. This is an important album from Evans early period. He already know how to make tunes haunting and poignant - "Haunted Heart" is just that.

But why buy this when you can get the same disk bundled with "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" for £1 less? I totally fail to understand the economics of these releases, but who will complain when you get such high quality music for so little money. Maybe the Record Industry is purging itself of previous greed. Or perhaps it's just going into final meltdown?

THESE THREE MASTERS OF JAZZ HAD WORKED TOGETHER FOR A YEAR B4 RECORDING THIS ALBUM .IT IS A REMARKABLE RECORDING IN A YEAR SCOTT LAFARO WOULD BE DEAD AND THE BILL EVANS TRIO WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.THIS ALBUM IN MY OPINION IS THEIR BEST WORK AND IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND WELL REMASTERED

Beautiful recording of the Trio and one of my go-to favourites when I want to listen to Bill. The version of Nardis on this album is breathtaking. 180g vinyl feels and sounds great.

A truely beautiful piece of work which has stood the test of time admirably.
