Product Description

Review

'The authors have shown themselves to be masters of data compression … The book is very well cross referenced, making fact finding easy … Sheriff and Geldart have written an important book which is authoritative and complete yet manages to treat subjects in depth. It is difficult to imagine a better book on the subject and I am sure it will prove even more difficult to write one.' Geophysical Journal

'They will serve the needs of these readers admirably as a thorough and up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the subject … Both volumes may be recommended unreservedly to everyone who is seriously interested in the subject … They are likely to be a standard text for many years to come.' Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research

'Few people have done as much … to demystify exploration seismology for geologists … what I believe to be the most readable and most 'user-friendly' set of volumes on exploration seismology.' AAPG Bulletin

'The strengths of the set are the breadth of its coverage, the many excellent data examples, and the insight into a variety of practical matters … chapters are largely independent of each other and the less analytically demanding ones can be usefully read on their own.' Seth Stein, Geological Sciences, Northwestern University

Format: Paperback
Although somewhat dated in a few areas, it is still about the best single book available for a complete course in exploration seismology. The authors have done a good job of trying to make the more theoretical aspects accessible to the less mathematically inclined, without unduly compromising rigour. Much of he material is classical, and the book's age (2nd edition published in 1995) doesn't matter much for such aspects. In some specialized areas, however, e.g. multicomponent methods or AVO, the latest developments are lacking. The existence of a section-by-section companion book by the same authors containing over 500 pages of problems with solutions (available from the SEG) is a big plus, both for instructors and students.

Best Book on Classic Seismic Technology 27 Jun. 2002
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is the book I first consult when working on a new technique. The book is a classic in that it is not just an anthology of reprints. Instead, it is a true survey of the state of the art of the science/art. Use it as a first reference, and you will not go wrong.

Very good seismic exploration book. The explanation is throughout, and there are some colored pages as well (i.e. to display colored seismic images).

A very good book for those who are interested in basic knowledge in applied seismology. Also lots of useful things about the seismic waves and data processing and interpretation in general. Really worth having!
