Review

"In its pages you will find adventure, action, romance, love and self-sacrifice, hair's-breadth escape and reckless courage, gallantry, panache and a droll, backhand humor that rivals that of P.G. Wodehouse. You will also find yourself, even more than with the celebrated stories of Holmes and Watson, in the hands of an indisputable artist. For more than any other adventure stories I know, these stories have a power to move the reader." -- Michael Chabon on NPR's "You Must Read This"

."..One of the cleverest of Conan Doyle's lighter works, full of spirit, ingenuity, and drollery." -- "The New York Times
"
"Brigadier Gerard is, after Holmes and Watson, Conan Doyle's most successful literary creation." -- Julian Symons

Product Description

There is no braver officer in Napoleon’s cavalry than étienne Gerard – especially in his own opinion. Whether kidnapped by gangs of brigands or outnumbered by enemy troops, the plucky little soldier is constantly gallant, chivalrous and ready to face any danger, even if he doesn’t always think before he acts.

With great gusto Gerard recounts the swashbuckling exploits and adventures of his glittering military career – carrying out secret missions for Napoleon, eluding capture by the Duke of Wellington, making a daring break from an English prison, rescuing ladies in distress, duelling to the death against the dastardly Baron Straubenthal and even saving the day at the Battle of Waterloo.

The adventures of Gerard are as exciting today as when I read them sixty years ago. Conan Doyle gives us a good idea of the French attitude to the Napoleonic Wars. Beats modern adventures with their sex and twisted plots into a cocked hat. A pity the edition did not have a few pictures of French cavalrymen in it. Geoff Hilton.

Well written, exciting and best of all funny. A great example of chivalry and positive outlook from a hugely entertaining author. By far Conan Doyle's best works.

Brigadier Gerard is a wonderful creation. Brave to the point of stupidity, wonderfully arrogant and self-opinionated, and gloriously light in the intellectual department. The best stories are those where Gerard succeeds despite himself, and yet he never sees that in telling the stories of his successes he is brutally exposing his own weaknesses and ignorance. The story about the fox will have you rolling in the aisles! So, why only 3 stars? The reason is that not all the stories recounted by Gerard are of equal strength - a slightly shorter book would have been, perhaps, better. Overall though well worth the read.
