5.0 out of 5 stars Buy the digital copy 27 July 2013
By Eric L. Yen - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book attempts to cover much of OEM (AKA Cloud Control). It is well written and easier to read than the 2,500+ pages of documentation. I would buy it again but would get the digital copy because there is so many images/screenshots that simply don't come over as well in black and white.

5.0 out of 5 stars Em12c book that will add value 24 Jun 2013
By F. Arshad - Published on
Let me start with the fact that i have had this book since Apress offered it in alpha. I have had the oppurtunity to not only read this book as it was being authored and have had the opportunity to interact with and meet the talented individuals that have written this book.
The Book starts out with an Overview of the Enterprise Manager 12c Product suite. Enterprise manager 12c is a complete rewrite of the and excellent monitoring and management tool. Pete Does an excellent job of explaining EM12c architecture and how it is the one tool you need for Oracle and non oracle products. The New plugin architecture makes it much more convenient to only have what you need deployed . After the Architecture, Gokhan takes us directly into installing the OMS and deployment of the agents. The Discussion on installation is very Linux centric but outside of platform requirements all other things are pretty much the same. Management of the OMS and repository is a very well done chapter and i sue it look up various things i do with the OMS myself. Nial's chapter that starts with diving into how to interact with EM12c is a must read specifically if you are coming from an older version of EM. His comparisons to the old grid control and its nuances are very well documented. Anand and Bobby take on cloud lifecycle management and make it sound so easy. The Software Library Management chapter is a must read and has all the important information that you need to know to setup provisioning and patching in the right manner. Leighton looks at Monitoring best practices in Chap and does a very good job of walking thru a lot of the confusion Jargon (ITIL) that the incident management tool is based off of. The Engineered Systems chapter offer a good glimpse on how to manage and monitor and setup (Setup is a big task) on an engineered system. Kellyn looks at the performance pages and ASH and makes the user seem like a pro with EM. Alex has written the Mysql plugin for EM12c in real life and thus does complete justice with the Metric extension chapter. TO Me Chapter 12 was pretty crucial as it is very hard to understand a lot of the terminology and the incident management chapter provides all you can understand scope of how to tame this beast. The High Availability chapter also provides real world setup options.
My Take on this book is a must have for any DBA to understand and operate OEM and be more productive with the tool that alot of DBA's already have access to but are unable to unlock the potential.

Covers the basics - What is really needed is a hands on book - one in which an actual application is setup from scratch and monitored
