Product Description

A lot of poker books promise instant success, screaming “Crush the online games” or “How I won a million dollars playing poker”. They suggest that poker is actually rather easy and that anyone with five minutes to spare can quickly gain expertise in the game. But you know that these claims simply aren’t true.

To achieve mastery of poker is not easy – it requires a great deal of deep thinking. Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold ‘em is a unique and remarkable book, providing a clear framework with which to analyse the game. The author Will Tipton, a PhD candidate at Cornell University, demonstrates how decision trees can be used to model complex poker decisions. Starting with simple preflop-only situations, he moves on to consider deeper concepts such as balance, the analysis of ranges, and the theory behind optimal bet sizing.

Why study Heads Up No Limit? Because a deep understanding of this format is crucial for the modern poker player. It’s a very exciting game in its own right, but it’s also critical for the final stages of tournament or sit’n’go play. If you find yourself playing for first prize, you will be playing heads up for a great deal of money. Perfecting your play will give you the edge to maximise your expectation whether you are competing for the big money or grinding out your profit in heads up cash games or SNGs.

Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold ‘em will give you that edge by:

* helping you identify and maximally exploit opponents’ tendencies
* giving you a clear explanation of the practical application of theoretical ideas
* developing your intuition about game theory so that you can apply its lessons directly at the tables

5.0 out of 5 stars Gain A Head Start In Heads Up 24 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not your average poker book exploring in-depth concepts of the game on an advanced level. The book examines Heads Up No Limit Hold'em, Game Theory Optimal and Exploitive Play. Tipton analyses situations through an interesting breakdown using decision trees and equity distribution charts. The book introduces and explains concepts such as Maximally Exploitive play, Nash Equilibrium and The Indifference Principle. Considered more of a textbook than a novel this piece will require study and work to grasp it fully and includes Test Yourself exercises throughout. This book focuses on River play and some Pre-flop games with the sequel being based on the Flop and Turn. An essential purchase for any serious Heads Up No Limit players out there and also a valuable resource for the Full Ring or 6max player looking to improve their heads up play. There is also an accompanying video series which helps explain the topics covered in the book for anyone worried that this book may be too complicated for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tip Top from Tipton 1 Oct. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is by no means a book that you can pick up and digest in one sitting, nor is it one that guarantees instant results.

However if you've got the time and patience to sit down and do some homework away from the tables then this book will explain how to make the best decisions, and recognise the leaks of others and therefore yourself.

There are no starting hand charts or advice that you must always do action 'x' when faced with decision 'y' instead you presented with the methodology to figure out which action is most EV and why.

The author is also active on 2p2 taking the time to answer pretty much any (theory or otherwise) question that people post in the books threads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good thorough material 27 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Excellent book. The material that is contained in the book is of first class quality. The situations that are discussed are analysed very thoroughly, using systematic approach of game trees, hand ranges and equity distributions. GTO play is estimated in these situations using simulations, and possible exploits are also discussed.

What slightly diminishes the practical value of this book is that some elementary and partially unrealistic situations are also devoted great length of analysis, and the preliminaries are discussed also in very detailed manner. Because of this, the number of more realistic and complicated situations that are analysedin this volume is a bit limited. Luckily, the second volume is coming and that probably will address this issue. Can't wait it!
