Review

This recording brings Viktoria Mullova together with John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique for a programme which couples two of the greatest violin concertos in the repertory: those by Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

Beethoven s Violin Concerto is his only concerto for a solo string instrument and is one of the cornerstones of the violin repertory. It is conceived on a huge scale and must have presented an enormous challenge to the violinist who first performed the work on 23 December 1806, Franz Clement, who essentially had to play the work at sight.

Mendelssohn was a violinist himself and the E minor Concerto is an integral part of the violin repertory. The concerto was given its first performance on 13 March 1845 when Ferdinand David was soloist. Mendelssohn had agonised over minute details of the work with David yet the final result is one of a piece of seeming great spontaneity and youthful freshness. The concerto was immediately recognised as a masterpiece and has remained so ever since.

Althouth I agree that dts is a better compression algorithm among others,
I cannot really see a point of making Bluray without any picture.

You would get better quality surround audio with SACD.
Whole point of Bluray disk would be to enjoy picture, perhaps to see a violinist playing, while enjoying good quality audio, in which aspect, Bluray excels DVD.

If you want a good audio on Bluray, you would use LPCM rather than compressed format.
Though claiming lossless, it is obvious that LPCM has better quality than lossless compression.
Again whole point of using compressed audio is to leave media space for video.

I am not saying the audio of this disk is bad.
I just struggle to make sense of it.

Somewhat disappointed 25 May 2011

One of the primary reasons I ordered this blu-ray disc was for the listening experience of this relatively new medium which has been well-received in the reviews I've read. I found this recording, however, to be only average in sound quality. I found the performance to be so-so as well.

Won't play on PowerDVD; really not DTS-HD 4 May 2011
By Barry H. Smith - Published on Amazon.com

This disc won't play on a computer with PowerDVD.

Also, I learned from a review site that it is really just a 5.1 transfer and re-encoded to DTS-HD--quoted here: "PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RECORD WAS ORIGINALLY PRODUCED FOR 5.1 AND PRESENTED FOR 7.1 SURROUND SOUND REPRODUCTION TO PROVIDE YOU WITH UNIQUE ACOUSTIC REALITY EXPERIENCE." Given that the disc size is on 6GB, this clearly could fit on a DVD. I think they are just hoping that by putting it on Blu-ray that we will think it is DTS-HD Master Audio quality. It is not.

Not worth the money 27 Mar 2009
By Walter W. Trimble - Published on Amazon.com
I bought three of this company's Blu-rays ... save your money and get the CD. Better yet, get an SACD version for real high-quality sound. I have "Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3," "Bach Orchestral Suites No. 1, 2 & 3," and "Vivaldi Four Seasons" in these discs. None will play in my Samsung Blu-ray player with the latest firmware. All play in my Panasonic. The sound quality is no better than standard quality 5.1 surround; in fact, I suspect they just copied the material from a standard 5.1 version. There's very little sound in the rear channels and virtually no separation. Sounds like stereo. Save your money, these are a rip-off.
