Book Description

17 July 2008 0195323262 978-0195323269
Experimental philosophy is a new movement that seeks to return the discipline of philosophy to a focus on questions about how people actually think and feel. Departing from a long-standing tradition, experimental philosophers go out and conduct systematic experiments to reach a better understanding of people's ordinary intuitions about philosophically significant questions. Although the movement is only a few years old, it has already sparked an explosion of new research, challenging a number of cherished assumptions in both philosophy and cognitive science.

The present volume provides an introduction to the major themes of work in experimental philosophy, bringing together some of the most influential articles in the field along with a collection of new papers that explore the theoretical significance of this new research.

Product Description

Review

an admirable introduction to the experimental philosophy movement (Richard Holton, Times Literary Supplement )

This book is the first to package what is exciting and new about this movement; it collects the most important papers by the leading experimental philosophers...As such it is essential reading...This is an exciting read-it's not often that something so radical and new comes along in philosophy. (Finn Spicer The Philosophers' Magazine )

4.0 out of 5 stars Aventures in Cognitive Science and Moral Philosophy 5 Sep 2010
By Theodore Godlaski - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an excellent introduction to the emerging trend in cognitive science: the empirical testing of philosohical assumptions. For anyone interested in how people assign moral responsibility, assess intentionality, and determine culpability this is a facinating read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good contents, poor typography 8 May 2011
By Frederico Lopes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not an ordinary review, but a complaint: I'd give this book 5 stars if the editors had used a bigger font. The contents are of exceptional quality, but I simply cannot read this book without stopping many times along the road. It's a pity that I see now I won't finish this tiresome book: not because of the contents, but because of the tininess of the font.
