Expedition to Undermountain is a Dugeons & Dragons super-adventure that revisits the greatest dungeon in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Located beneath the city of Waterdeep, Undermountain has lured countless heroes to their doom.

Rich with source material for players and a new combat encounter format designed to make the Dungeon Master's job easier, as well as information to help Dungeon Masters adapt the adventure to serve their home campaigns.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun dungeon delving experience, 17 Sep 2007
This review is from: Expedition to Undermountain (Forgotten Realms) (Hardcover)
Set in the Forgotten Realms setting but self-contained enough for a DM to play with it in any setting, this is a fun adventure. The plot is cliched and to read the plot, well to be honest, it is not very interesting, however when played with a group it's a whole lot of fun. Unlike other previous adventures which were very descriptive of the game world they do deliberatly leave you with empty areas or possibilities to add in your own game world content. I liked the tactical encounters being expanded and monster abilities and tactics described and there are plenty of maps. My only complaints are the actual arrival zone of players is not located clearly on the master map of the first level and that it's not the nicest of maps formats they could have chosen. Also the plot of the mad mage is not very interesting but the players do not care they have an excuse to go adventuring in varied dugneons. Do not to worry any decent DM can easily replace the rather limp plot given with something more dynamic and interesting and in the book itself it does give ideas for alternative reasons to go into the Underdark. My final complaint is a few of the entries do lack data fully on monster's descriptions and abilities, so either change it to suit your needs or if you can be bothered go and reference the books it mentions. I have enjoyed using this product more than previous adventures. This may not be quite the most original plot ever but it is one of the more interesting and varied dungeons I have come across and kept my group coming back for more. Finally I have found this product easier on the DM to run.

huge classic dungeon crawl worth every penny and it forms the basis of Neverwinter Nights 'Hordes of the Underdark'
it would take months to take a party from top to bottom of this huge game setting

5.0 out of 5 stars Expedition to Undermountain - review, 30 Aug 2011
This review is from: Expedition to Undermountain (Forgotten Realms) (Hardcover)
When I first heard about this product I was extremely sceptical about it to say the least. The 2nd Edition Undermountain boxed set was so well presented, I could not believe the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 version could be improved upon it, especially with the new trend of (sadly) `dummying down` the content of manuals and leaving out a lot of former material entirely when it comes to re-writing old manuals to new.

Couple this with other on line reviews I`ve read concerning the fact that a lot of atmospheric flavour, room descriptions, encounters, and NPC`s, all included in the original set, were missing from the new book.

I could not have been more wrong about Expedition to Undermountain.

The book is a sheer delight from start to finish. Yes, things are missing that are in the original; but this newer version includes a whole host of other things that were not included in the original. I really like the layout, the myriad of maps (I`ve always liked small maps, they`re so easy to use... and believe me, there are LOTS of them sprinkled throughout the pages of this tome), the look and the feel of the book is sublimely amazing, and I have that "wow" factor and a smile of contentment playing across my face as I browse the pages with hungry interest. To me, this is just another reminder of just how good Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 really was.

From the first page to the last, Expedition to Undermountain simply makes you want to play the game. Which is something not many books manage to achieve with me.

I will definitely look for more WotC "Expedition to____" books from now on.
