I'm partly writing a review as a response to a very poor review which I found gives only one side of the story. If you are buying the dvd purely to learn about the historical story of "stanley the explorer" - then perhaps you may share similar frustrations to the above reviewer, although I still found they refer to his expedition a lot, since his is the expedition which has served as the model for this one.

I however, bought this dvd in the interest of seeing the African landscape and an image of what it would be like to travel through it. The scenery is superb, very beautiful and inspiring, wonderful range of colours and an engaging story to follow through, with quite exciting/enjoyable encounters with wildlife as well as experience of the terrain and its challenges. True, perhaps the dangers faced were not the same as the expedition of Stanley's days, but then this was an entire group of people well informed on how to travel through african terrain and so knew how to look after themselves appropriately. There certainly are challenges too, which make you consider how it must have been for less informed people of the past - one event that particularly comes to mind is the point at which one of the group is struck with a bout of malaria, and you really get to see the drastic impact this illness can have on a human organism - at points he clearly descends into a dreamland talking total gibberish whilst shivering and obviously created a worrying situation for the other team-members.

In summary,
"Expedition" is a highly educational dvd on a rare theme, the like of which you are unlikely to find elsewhere. The conveying of the difficulty and challenges, yet beauty of the terrain certainly could not be communicated through the form of a book. The colours, scenery, wildlife, and the shared experience of the travelling are very well put across, and it is in these aspects that my entire reason for buying this dvd was satisfied. In essence, I found what I was looking for.

Disappointing. 13 April 2010
Format:DVD
Lacks serious view of history of original expedition. Concentrates on boring characters that all have little acts to the camera. Just lacks depth and weight. The African guides carry tourist quality shields. Benedict Allen is constantly seen carrying a bow and arrow for no use. I know you cannot recreate the 19th century but this is really little more than a cross country hike.
