If you have ever walked through a British city you will no doubt have occasionally wondered; what where they thinking when they built that? This is particularly the case for some grand post-war pieces of concrete architecture.
Great Expectations provides something of an answer to that question and suggests to the viewer a broader question, namely, what is the role of Architect?
From Rudolph Steiner and the physical manifestation of spiritual modes of thinking to the Communist city planners of Brasilia engineering equality or the numerous attempts of building designers to alter society by altering it's built environment. Daft ideas, dangerous ideas, inspirational ideas. If you are interested in social change, if you look sideways at the world around us and at the environmental afflictions created by our cities then this DVD will be of interest. Even better, the soundtrack, minimal narration, fascinating interviews and broad stretch of time covered make this a most fascinating documentary. If only it was a short series or a feature length documentary i would have given it five stars, 50 minutes just left me wanting more.
