Funny and empathic - I loved it!, 18 Mar 2010
I have read of few books for dads on pregnancy and most have been quite jokey and blokey. Recently released this book was like a breath of fresh air. This book does have a really great sense of humour and speaks to dads in their language but it is no way flippant. The book is packed with expert tips from a male midwife, obstetricians, psychologists and `a man who knows a lot about car seats'
Each chapter roughly follows the pregnancy as it should progress and gives an idea of how the child is developing in the womb, how your partner is feeling and why she is in the mood she is and it contains expert advice and tips to help you make the right decisions. Lots of dads also share their story.
I think this book is fab...so easy to read, interesting and useful. It also shows great empathy towards a woman's experience and I felt the author really cared about mum being fully supported.
Some really useful parts of the book (often not addressed) are dealing with miscarriage, an explanation of the facts of life, a conversion chart for baby weights, a discussion of the dad dreaded nappies, a little chapter entitled when bump stops the grind (SEX!) And many other really useful bits every woman would want someone sensible to chat to her partner about.
The book also has a brilliant glossary at the back so all those new confusing words are explained. The last words in this book go to the mums in a nifty little section entitled the `Dos and don'ts of being a new dad according to new mums.' This is my favourite:
Don't sit next to your partner while she is breast feeding, put the TV on sports news move the remote put of reach then go upstairs out of earshot while we're left unable to move watching the bloody football for 40 minutes!
Oh how I wish someone had told my fella this!
Overall, I found this to be a very funny, immensely sensitive and deeply informative read. I would highly recommend this book to new dads.

So good the wife nicked it to read!, 24 July 2010
I am a first time dad and my wife is 5000 miles away so dont get to be with her enough, but only for a while longer, but i wanted to understand what she is going through so i can help her. well as best as i can.
I found this book by accident, but liked the reviews that had been written so i ordered it. on the first night of getting it i was tired, but thought i should read at least a couple of pages, but 20 pages later!!! wow. ok so i was past the bit that the book starts with the 0 to 8 weeks bit, but everything it said about was on the money for what my wife had gone through. so much so it could have been written about her experiences.
then chatting with her i was reading parts of the book to her about her up coming tests and she was telling me that my book was so much better and written in a better way than the book that she has about it. so being the big old softy i am i posted it out and ordered me a second one.
got to say if the rest of the book is as good and well informed as what i have read then its worth every penny and more.
it uses everyday speak and nothing is overly complicated and the humour is refreshing also.
I would seriously recomend this book to any guy that is going to be a dad or is hoping him and his partner will be having a baby its a really good read.

Like Vicky Iovine (Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy) - for MEN, 9 Jun 2010
If you're a mum-to-be and you've read Vicky Iovine's book A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and enjoyed that, this is the perfect book for your partner. It's got a great sense of humour and will even have you laughing out loud at points. But unlike the other books that are humorous, this one is packed full of real information, the kind of info other for-dads books just don't have. This book doesn't just view the dad as an accessory, it gives him the central role he deserves.
Highly recommended!
