Book Description

21 Mar 2012
From marauding monkeys to strange men in her bedroom, from Africa to Australasia to America, with stops in Melanesia, the Caribbean and Europe along the way, Apple Gidley vividly sketches her itinerant global life. The challenges of expatriation, whether finding a home, a job, or a school are faced mostly with equanimity. Touched with humour and pathos, places come alive with stories of people met and cultures learned, with a few foreign faux pas added to the mix. "A fascinating insight into the world of a lifelong expatriate with the joys, excitement, challenges and sadness that it entails, told with great openness, humour and honesty." Brian Friedman, Founder and CEO - The Forum for Expatriate Management www.totallyexpat.com "In a world where definitions of belonging and home are changing, Apple shows us it is possible to live with joy in these new ways." Ruth E. Van Reken, Letters Never Sent, co-author, Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds, co-founder, Families in Global Transition "With a novelist's expert control of dialogue, a journalist's eye for detail, a loving mother and wife's compassion, and a raconteur's ability to draw you into her fascinating life, Apple Gidley has written a page-turner memoir." Anne P. Copeland, PhD, Executive Director, The Interchange Institute, www.interchangeinstitute.org

About the Author

Apple Gidley started her expat life at a month old in Kano, Nigeria in the cooling embers of colonialism. Since those early days her itinerant lifestyle has included newly independent countries full of hope, nations we could all learn from and one or two we shouldn't. Picking up a husband and two children along the way, Apple has relocated 26 times through 12 countries. Her roles, as well as wife and mother, have included editing a regional magazine for an international charity in Asia, selling dive equipment in the US, springing Distressed British Nationals from gaol in a small West African country, among others. An Anglo-Australian now known to thousands as ExpatApple thanks to her popular blog at the Daily Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/applegidley, she believes to be a true global nomad we have to be actively engaged in wherever we call home, for the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the armchair traveller 7 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback
I must admit that this book appealed to me on more than one level. On the first level I hoped that it would provide for my enjoyment of `stay-at-home travel guide', the genre of book that allows us a glimpse into the life of those who live abroad. On the second level I hoped it might give me a glimpse of my mother, as she too had been an `expat brat', born and brought up in India just before the 2nd World War. I was richly rewarded in both cases. Apple's book is a wonderful sensory delight, opening our eyes, ears and noses to the very different communities and cultures she finds herself in over the years. The humour and insight she brings to the journey she shares with the reader is a highlight of the book. I'd highly recommend this book to every reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Expat Memoir & Romping Good Read 29 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
Simply put, this is one of the very best expat memoirs I've read (and I've read MANY). Rather than simply relaying her life story in chronological order, this Adult Third Culture Kid, parent and now grandparent to TCKs has achieved the trifecta of good writing, good storytelling and making us care. Apple Gidley shows rather than tells, has a great ear for dialogue, touches on a wide range of issues across the human condition, emphasizes what brings us together, and more so than most, is able to put her life/expat experiences into meaningful perspective. This sweeping saga of multi-generational expatriate life is a ROMPING GOOD READ.

5.0 out of 5 stars When 'home' is where you are posted. 7 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
Apple Gidley's fascinating life is played out from her birth against
a backdrop of colourful scene changes - some more expected than others
- a fact which she accepts with stoicism and an open heart. Gidley
shares her titbits of wisdom along with her rich experience of a life
where 'home' is the place she is posted at that time. In vividly
describing her joys and sadness, she has put on record an expat
lifestyle which is subtly changing but continues to pose challenges.
Her positive attitude is as relevant now as it was in her young life.
