Product Description

Product Description

The breathtaking island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean and is separated from southeastern India by a mere 30-mile chain of shoals. This proximity to India has had an inevitable effect on Sri Lanka's cuisine, as did the successive Portuguese, Dutch and British occupations. However, over the centuries the majority of these dishes have been modified to suit the local palate. Sample menus, explanations of spice uses and availability, typical cooking techniques, and descriptions of traditional utensils complement the 150 recipes, all adapted for home cooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent Buy!, 11 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Exotic Tastes of Sri Lanka (Hardcover)
A lot of recipes for the price. I have already tried out two of the dishes (yellow rice and capsicum badun) and they came out excellent!! - had a lot of praise from friends who enjoyed it. There is a wide selection of rice dishes, curries, appetizers and desserts. Also recipes for a lot of "village" dishes for which the ingredients can be bought at an Asian Store. Excellent book for Srilankan cooking that is easy for even the amatuer cook.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Sri Lankan Food, 5 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Exotic Tastes of Sri Lanka (Hardcover)
The book gives a good overview of Sri Lankan cooking, including as it does Sinhalese, Tamil and "rustic" dishes (including fish intestine and roe badum - a dish no Sri Lankan I know has ever heard of). Recipes are easy to follow but I found some of the spicing and cooking techniques odd, to say the least. Recipes call for 6 fenugreek seeds, for example, a quantity so small as to be pointless adding. Quantities of chili, however, are certainly authentic - 1 and a half tablespoons for a pound of fish!! Readers not used to cooking with chili would be well advised to scale this down substantially. Overall, however, it is a fine introduction to the little known cuisine of Sri Lanka, with the section on sweets particularly good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good cookbook, 9 Aug 2010

A great little book, with reliable recipes. Like any cook book, I tweaked the ingredients a little bit to suit me, for e.g. Baked crab - if you like to taste lots of crab, reduce the qty of potato you use.
I'm glad I bought it. However I find that the best ever recipes from Ceylon are in Charmaine Solomon's cookbooks - her Complete Asian Cookbook(thorough), The Curry Cookbook(brilliant), The Encyclopaedia of Asian Cooking, to name a few.
