Product Description

Synopsis

With more people embracing the concept of responsible travel, ecotourism is the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry. Exotic Retreats is a sumptuous collection of gorgeous holiday retreats. It features 40 remarkable hotels, ecolodges, and resorts from around the world...from the tops of mountains to tiny secluded islands, and from five-star luxury pads to barefoot hideaways. What makes these retreats different is that they all tread lightly on the earth; they all give more to their local communities than they take, and they all use architecture in a sustainable way which also complements the beauty of the surroundings. Organised by region, the beauty and character of each destination comes alive in colour photographs, sketches, and architectural plans. And for all those planning their dream holiday, contact details are given! This is the ultimate wanderlust inspiration for actual or armchair travellers, as well as for those looking for exotic design ideas for their own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad. Excellent. Hopeful. 23 Dec 2008
By fdoamerica - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Sad. Excellent. Hopeful. How did she do it? These feelings and this question were what I got when I reached the end of the book. I was SAD that Julia Faiers only selected 40 retreats, lodges and hotels to profile. By the time I got to the end of the book I was stimulated to GO, while still wishing I had more profiles to view as an armchair traveler. EXCELLENT are both the photographs of the properties and her writing. Her words champion the concepts of "sustainable tourism," "ecotourism" & "responsible travel." HOPEFUL: I am, that Julia Faiers will research and write more, more, more. However, I was a bit disappointed that she did not reveal more about her method of selected and if she visited the properties. At the beginning she gives a scant paragraph about how she made her selections, but I desired to know how and why she chose this property over the hundreds that are out there and if she went to the retreat, what did she experience? That said, if you want to get off the beaten path and you desire to find a remote Shangri-la in this shrinking world, get this book. Highly Recommended 4.5 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Hotels! 30 Nov 2005
By S. Strouse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Well, most of us will never be able to afford to stay in most of these hotels, but they are absolutely beautiful, and the information on them and why they are eco-friendly. The photos are incredible!
