The 40th anniversary edition is in fact the 3rd copy of the album that I possess, having the original vinyl, the first issue on CD (which we had to wait until 1995 for!) and now the remastered CD. It's worth it though as the sound on the latest "Exotic Birds and Fruit" is wonderfully clean.
A wonderful album that gets of to a great rocking start with "Nothing But The Truth" working its way to the albums final track the, ballad "New Lamps for Old" ( you can really appreciate Barrie Wilson's contribution on the drums thanks to the quality of the remastering). Along the way there are further excellent songs to savour such as "Strong as Samson" and "Butterfly Boys" and a particular favourite of mine "Beyond the Pale".
It was always going to be difficult to follow "Grand Hotel" but opting for the back to basics route Procol were re-energised and delivered a wonderful album that did not enjoy the commercial success it deserved. Funnily enough, the next album, "Procol's 9th" did reveal the band to be running out of steam but due to the hit single "Pandora's Box" it sold more copies. Oh well, that's life I guess!
The remastered CD also contains "Drunk Again" which was a B side and well worth hearing, and an alternative mix of "Strong as Samson".

Seems like every other album this band put out is being newly described as Back to Basics. Admittedly their forays into intellectual creativity, whilst being artful and of high calibre, were poorly received by the listening public, forcing the band to abandon such avenues and return to a simpler musical style. The songs here all have a taste about them as if they were considered for Grand Hotel and dropped at the last moment - certainly the material on the two albums is very interchangeable, albeit produced in very different ways. Here Procol adopt a more rock n roll approach, creating a bunch of songs that would feature well in a low-tech live set, all the time retaining the quality that makes you wish they'd been given a grander studio production. Strong as Samson and The Idol are classics, whilst the bonus track has in fact appeared on the previous CD release of this album (AAD) and so is not technically a bonus.
I had to wait for Amazon to drop the price of this album, bringing it down to the level of the others in the series. Not sure why they held out so long on this particular title! Worth a place in any rock collection.

Magnificent 26 May 2008
Format:Audio CD
I saw the band playing this album at the Colston Hall in Bristol and it was unusual to be so moved by songs not heard before. PH is probably the most under-rated band in the world: this is a superb album.

Stand-outs are Strong as Sampson, The Idol (Mick Grabham's finest hour with PH), Beyond the Pale - in fact, all of it. The playing is, as ever, first-class, world class, and Brooker's straining urgent vocals never sounded better. Strong as Sampson even has BJ Cole on pedal steel, whom I had the pleasure of meeting when my old mate Mike Wedgwood was playing in Kiki Dee's band with him. This is majestic, well thought out, brilliantly played and important music. I cannot recommend highly enough, even if you loathe PH.

File under indispensible.
