This is a two-stage "ab initio" Spanish course, designed to meet the needs of students aiming for a high level of competence within a short space of time and with a minimum of teacher contact. Each stage comprises a student's book and support book/cassette set with 18 self-access, topic-based units. This cassette set supports the first level student's book, and takes beginners to a proficiency comparable to GCSE Higher Tier, Institute of Linguists' General Certificate, Intermediate GNVQ or NVQ Level 2. The workbook contains the transcripts of all the recordings, plus the key to exercises in the student's book.

You really need the tapes that accompany this book to get any real value from it. The book works through basic Spanish vocabulary in an easily digestible form and focuses on the language that is most useful for those intending to take a short stay in a Spanish speaking country. An advantage of this book is it gives the Spanish-American pronunciation of vocabulary as well as the traditional Spanish pronunciation.

This book may be excellent but its value is in the many dialogues on the audio tapes. Many of the exercises in the book are built around the audio and the value of the book is lost without the audio material.
However, the tapes are no longer available and the publishers, while acknowledging receipt of my email have not provided any information regarding the republishing of the audio material either on tape or CD.
Dont Buy until this issue is resolved.

This book is a post-16 and/or independent learning Spanish GCSE textbook. It covers the basic ground well enough, while failing to challenge the learner, who, like me, is taking GCSE as the springboard to further quaifications. Its biggest problem is that the publisher no longer supplies the audio material to support the book. It is a cynical marketing ploy of Hodder (please supply whichever second name they are using at the moment) to sell the book at full price without the necessary support material.

Nice book but in not very good conditions
I bought this book second hand, the price was cheap but the book wasn't in the nicest conditions. Apart from that it is a very useful book for teaching spanish grammar.

The book came in a very good condition. Except for a few scribbles here and there, it was great. And the delivery was quite fast as well, around 1 week actually. Im quite happy :)
