This is a study of the sharp losses of old age, set alongside the wicked humour of the "cared for" for the carers. In an inter-leaved reflection through each character's life and love, I think Barfoot engages the reader with death and life, and the choices we may make, and those we can't. The book is in no sense depressing or maudlin, and it celebrates the strong human compassionate spirit fighting for meaning.
