Review

"so well written I learn new things every time I open it""The book exceeds my expectations.""an excellent book that is very well written""well presented and easy to follow""If there's even a whiff of a chance of you having to come into contact with Exim or its runtime configuration, then I can do nothing else but strongly recommend this book. The detail's there in spades, it reads very well, and is a fine complement to the reference manual." "the book is simply amazing. I find the format/style/whatever 100 times better than [other documentation]. Wish I had this thing a month ago."

Product Description

E-mail is the most widely used application on the Internet. Exim is rapidly becoming one of the most widely used mail servers, handling mail for tens of millions of users daily. Exim is free software. It's easy to configure. It's scalable, running on single-user desktop systems as well as on ISP servers handling millions of users. (It's the default server on many Linux systems, and it's available for countless versions of UNIX. You can run it on Windows using Cygwin.)Exim is fast, flexible, and reliable. It is designed not to lose messages even if your server machine crashes. It can be used as a secure Internet-facing front-end to other, proprietary, mail systems used internally in your organization. Exim supports lookups from LDAP servers, SQL databases, and other data sources, letting you automate maintenance and configuration. It can work in conjunction with other tools for virus-checking and spam-blocking, to reject unwanted e-mails before they even enter your site. This book will help you deploy Exim as your SMTP e-mail server throughout your organization, and to configure, tune, and secure your Exim systems.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not an idiots guide to Exim!, 3 Jan 2005
I bought this book as it is the only one on the subject, kindly written by the author of Exim itself. Its extremely informative, however it is written in a rather generic way. It is at a higher level than I was looking for as a beginner.
I am sure this book will prove useful once I am more experienced using Exim, but I was not able to work out how to configure using it as a novice, for that I found turorials on the internet.
File names and locations are not clear when reading for reference.
If you are an Exim user and have a bit of spare change its worth the money, but dont expect an easy ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial, 7 July 2003

This is a very easy book to pick up and get Exim to work in almost any environment, but alas the lack of a proper reference section does make it more difficult to subsequently fine tune the configuration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential if you're running an Exim mailserver, 11 Aug 2008
By
Rich (Cheltenham, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Exim SMTP Mail Server: Official Guide for Release 4 (Paperback)
Whilst documentation for Exim is freely available on the website there is no substitute for having the book sat on your desk in front of you.

This book is extremely well written and well organised, the index will take you straight to the information you require and from that other relevant topics continue on subsequent pages. Peter Hazel's authoring skills are very much like his software engineering - pretty damn good!

Having been running Exim servers for 3-4 years this book is a well worn addition to my library. If you're involved in configuring, maintaining or administering Exim mailservers then it should be a central part of yours too.
