About the Author

Steve Mifflin was born in Cheshire, England in 1971. He attended his first Stoke City game in 1979 at The Victoria Ground where Stoke beat local rivals Derby County. From the age of seven he has been hooked and has regularly attended home and away games with his father and younger brother. For Steve every home game is an away game as he now lives in Reading. Although the family roots run deep through Stoke-on-Trent, Steve has always had exile status from the city. The lack of a Potteries accent singles him out at The Britannia Stadium and when on the road with Stoke City. Steve is married to Kate, a long-suffering football widow. He has two daughters Ellie and Daisy. Ellie has recently declared her allegiance to local team Reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 20 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Like other reviewers I loved this book which my daughter bought me for my birthday. This makes a superb companion to the club DVD of the year - watch the highlights, read Steve's view of the match, and it's like being there again. Please, Steve, can you write a book like this EVERY season? Please? Give Kate the royalties if you have to, but this would make a wonderful annual event.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 30 Aug 2009

Format:Paperback
Being a Stoke fan myself i stumbled upon this book whilst browsing Amazon for other football related books i wasn't aware that there was a new Stoke book about which was a nice surprise, and even better it was about our first season back in the top flight! the book has on obvious appeal to Stoke fans as many of us can relate to what Steve is writing, but the book itself offers much more than just a read about how unlucky we were not to win and how hard done to we were etc.. it's an honest book and also delves into the troubles football fans encounter in following their team home and away especially in the current economic climate where money is tight and tickets aren't getting any cheaper! Not to mention the problems with family friends rudely having their wedding on the same day that Stoke secure their Premier League status!

Highly recommended from myself to Stoke fans alike and other fans of football clubs especially those that travel the country following their teams as they will certainly be able to relate this book and the highs and low that come with the football league season both on and off the pitch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the football widow 1 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I thought this was a book for my husband, but when he took a break from reading, I couldn't resist dipping in. And I was surprised by the addictive and entertaining nature of the read. Each chapter set the scene; defined the importance of each game, exposed the hopes and fears of the fans, built the tension before the game, and expressed the emotions after it. I've never really understood the passion of football, but this book has brought me a lot closer to it... I would say it is essential reading for the football widow. And as a woman, I loved the battles of conscience, where the chief aim of getting to the next away game was disguised in cunning plans of supportive fatherhood, such as visits to the Lowry Centre, Monkeyworld or Alton Towers. So clever!
