Review

"there is a crying need for a business perspective to the contemporary creative arts. My colleagues in the professional world rightly despair at the progressive reduction in confidence and breadth of knowledge of those wishing to enter the world of commerce."

Product Description

Creating and organizing successful photography exhibitions requires business finesse and expertise as well as artistic ability. "Exhibiting Photography" offers step-by-step guidance, paired with anecdotes and case studies of real situations to help photographers at any level improve their business skills, explore new exhibiting techniques and learn to self promote with confidence. Addressing the technical and aesthetic concerns of amateur and professional photographers, rarely discussed in such detail, Shirley Read's informative new book explores: the process of finding the right exhibition space; how to design and install an exhibition; the right and wrong way to approach a gallery; how to navigate contracts; pricing and selling; and, how to establish budgets and timetables. "Exhibiting Photography" also includes documents and check-lists to help photographers stay organized and maximize the success of an exhibition. Enhance your artistic ability by mastering the fundamental social, strategic and organizational skills that successful photographers utilize when navigating the world of art exhibition and commerce. Learn the right and wrong way to approach the managers of an exhibition space and how to find one that suits your photography. Gain valuable insight from case studies with real situation dos and don'ts in actual exhibition settings. This tile includes documents and check lists to help you with time management, budgets, invites, figuring out what tools you need for hanging, press releases, and more.

I recently held my first solo photography exhibition and Shirley Read's book `Exhibiting Photography' became my bible. Each chapter holds a hearty discussion on all areas of staging a show, including editing work, gallery choice, sponsorship, PR, presentation, artists statements, the list goes on.

Thorough checklists prepare you for every eventuality and the book provides meticulous advice on how to best approach this frequently daunting process.

Most importantly, perhaps, Shirley Read raises some very serious questions about the motives for holding an exhibition; what the artist expects to get out of it and what can realistically be achieved.

Exhibiting Photography: A Practical Guide to Choosing a Space, Displaying Your Work, and Everything in Between

Fantastic gold mine of information, about the 'Dark Arts' of exhibiting, particularly photography. Laid out in clear & concise terms, with live 'real life' examples to back up salient points.

An extremely useful book, whether you are stating out, or just need an aide memoire.

Recommended.

As someone planning their first photo exhibition I brought this book on spec and based on the description. I fully expected to have to buy at least one other book to complement it and give me more information - practical guides are often not quite what you expected them to be. Not in this case though; in this case I got all I needed to know and the title really does reflect the contents. I found this book helpful and informative in every step along the way to planning and preparing for an exhibition and both the exhibition and afterwards as well. It is well written and is simple, easy to understand and full of useful tips and other peoples experiences. Of course, it won't necessarily make your exhibition happen - mine didn't - but it did make me seem like someone who knew what they were doing and talking about and gave me the confidence to go for it anyway.
