I found this book to be very interesting as it covered all aspects of the life of James Berry. It revealed many interesting facts about Victorian life, attitudes, crime and punishment. Some accounts of the crimes, trials and execution of Berrys cliants are graphic. The book also deals with the emotions envolved in carrying out the final penalty of the law. Berry was a colourful, outspoken and contrivertial characture who liked and got publicity. I recomend this book to any one but those with an interest in history, crime, punishment and human nature will find it facinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars For or against capital punishment? 21 Aug 2006
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book covering the entire life of James Berry the Public Hangman. It gives a brief review of his early school boy days and later the many varied jobs he had before becoming hangman. These jobs included being a policeman. The book covers many of the executions he carried out, some in more detail than others, and it also covers the personal effect the job had on him and his family. The book refers to newspaper articles, debates in the House of Commons and some of Berrys' personal notes and the author has put it all together to produce a very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Literally Changed My Life! 25 May 2012

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
And I'm not joking either! I actually purchased this book about 5 years ago and was so overwhelmed by the protagonists life that I went about and wrote my own screenplay based off the research in this book. I've read this book 3 times and carried out a lot of my own work as well to try and get to the bottom of Berry and how he lived, the people he executed and their crimes.

The book is truly fascinating and the writing is enjoyable. Not a wasted word or filler contained within. If you enjoy this book, then please feel free to read my screenplay too A Very Different Public Official - Screenplay Format (Victorian Crime), ok shameless plug over.
