Very gripping, if a little gruesome 29 Jun. 2011
By C. J. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
James Berry is not nearly as well known a hangman as Albert Pierrepoint, or John Ellis, for example, but his story is definitely an interesting one and it is well told by this author. There is a lot of interesting biographical detail as well as some rather disturbing accounts of botched executions. A great read for anyone with an interest in the subject.

If you're into executions ,this is a great one & another is Executioner: Pierrepoint an autobiography, published by: Eric Dobby isbn 1-85882-061-8 .About Albert Pierrepoint, Englands last Official Hangman, very engrossing & both books hard to put down once you've started reading them.
After the first few hangings...... 27 Aug. 2013
By Charles H. Levenson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
...it gets rather boring.Berry's own accounts of these matters are called into question by the author, while according to Berry a majority of the people he hanged more or less accepted their fate stoicly..Personally I doubt this assertion..The descriptive process involved in each hanging is more or less the same,so that except for the names of the doomed, thier particular crimes(which are about as'sensational"as a wet noodle),and what Berry had to eat at the various prisons in which he performed his work, this book is repetition personified.
