Product Description

Synopsis

St Kilda, Britain's remotest island group, has for centuries filled visitors with awe and amazement. Only in the past decade has there been a concerted attempt tp learn of the island's inhabitants through modern scientific archaeological excavation. Even the most mundane material recovered from these excavations reveals a tremendous amount about living conditions on Hirta. Following the description of the excavations and finds, the discoveries are related to similar Hebridean sites, and an attempt is made to marry the documentary evidence with the archaeological remains. The result is an insight into the island way of life, from the "improved" conditions which belatedly brought the islanders out of the medieval period, to the deserted shells left behind when their owners requested evacuation at the end of a long and hard struggle. This is the first in a series of monographs dedicated to research into the archaeology and ethnology of St Kilda.
