Book Description

21 Jan 2010
High in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin discovers a 500-year-old mummy that should not be there. While deep in the South American jungle, Conklin's nephew, Sam, stumbles upon a remarkable site nestled between two towering peaks, a place hidden from human eyes for thousands of years. Ingenious traps have been laid to ensnare the careless and unsuspecting, and wealth beyond imagining could be the reward for those with the courage to face the terrible unknown. But where the perilous journey inward ends - in the cold, shrouded heart of a breathtaking necropolis - something else is waiting for Sam Conklin and his exploratory party. A thing created by Man, yet not humanly possible. Something wondrous... something terrifying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!! 23 Feb 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is exactly what I have been looking for!! A slightly far-fetched, slightly sinister adeventure! As you might expect there is a group of young archaeologists, inevitably there is a love interest, and of course there is a lot of danger. This is complete genius, I couldn't put it down and a week after finishing it I am still thinking about the ending. I can see why people may have found the ending disappointing although I don't know how it could be any better. Seriously buy this book if its an adventure you are looking for, this won't disappoint!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start, disappointing end. 29 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book earns three stars from me becasue of the first two thirds. The plot chugs along well, it's clearly well researched, there's plenty of mystery and adventure and the characters are fleshed out nicely and are believable - oh, except for the redheaded, strong-willed irishwoman who knows how to handle a gun (from Belfast, of course) cliche anyone?.

From then on, it goes downhill. the ending seems messy and frankly quite hurried and with each page it becomes increasingly ridiculous to be honest - the 'serious' start gives way to sheer fantasy.

Overall i think it is worth the purchase, despite my criticism, because it is a page turner. Just don't expect anything close to Crichton, Brown, Napier or De Brul (at least regarding the ending) I think that like me you will be wisked away with the story, but at times you will have to laugh (or cringe) at what is put in front of you. I was ultimately disappointed with the ending where the reason for the book being a page turner was so I could get it over and done with!.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book of two parts 14 Aug 2011
By Oxygen
Format:Paperback
Having read Amazonia, I was keen to read more James Rollins work.
This book has a very distinct feel of two different stages split over the first two thirds and final third of the book.
The first two thirds moves very quickly with no filler. The lack of distinct chapters keeps you reading long into the night.
However, the final third, whilst still fast paced, seems to lose a little of the tension and felt a little disjointed from the style and tightness of the beginning.

However, this book still achieves something that numerous other books don't: no filler, no pointless side plots and no long winded character explanations. It just gets on with the plot!
Worth a read but I would recommend Amazonia more as it maintains pace and a connected story all the way through.
