Been here before?,

This review is from: Excalibur Alternative (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book but can only give it 4 stars as I had already worked out the ending twist before we got there. Strongly reminded me of the Janissaries series and other SF books where modern, (or newer in this case) tactics take on old fashioned armies. The last book of Webers own Dahak series is also similar in style with new imported tactics beating old army methods.

A great book, showing Weber's command of military history,
This review is from: Excalibur Alternative (Hardcover)
Several shiploads of English longbowmen meet an alien civilisation, and are pressganged into service as captive soldiers. Weber portrays the attitudes and thoughts of the period perfectly, and displays his usual command of military history, even in the fields of archery and cavalry, rather than his usual forte of naval combat. Both the main part of The Excalibur Alternative and the distinct ending section are well written and evocative, and the only problem is that the whole book begs for a sequel, which doesn't seem to even be on the horizon yet.

Middling Crusade,
This review is from: Excalibur Alternative (Paperback)
Well this is an okay tale I suppose. It suffers though from comparisons. Knights In space has been done before and so much better. You see everytime I try and write something about this book I find myself wanting to review The High Crusade by Poul Anderson instead. So do yourself a favour go and read that much more exciting, funny, and intelligent yarn instead. That is the orginal and best.
