1.0 out of 5 stars It really is an advert! 8 Nov 2006
By Clare C
Format:Hardcover
Oh what a disappointment this book was. As a promotional tool it is excellent - described how this company evolved over the last few years but, to be honest, who is that concerned with a retail establishment that they will pay [...]for it? Of course I could be jaundiced: opinion seems very split in the reviews between love and loathe but take a look at the number of copies that are available second hand - given that this is a short print run - and the disappointment of other purchasers will be clear.

If you really want to know how a camera shop works buy this book. If you are interested in Nikon or Nikon history by one of the many excellent books out there already. Grays of Westminster may look and sound like it was born in the days of Victoria but it wasn't. It's a product of the 80s. It's a great shop but shouldn't need to resort to building this bizarre and false mythology.

A personal message to Gray Levitt. As a give away to your most sincere customers this volume is (like a previous reviewer said) a prized work. As a chargeable work it is taking the proverbial. You and your company are better than that! Sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars £25 for a store catalogue? You must be joking! 22 Sep 2006
Format:Hardcover
I've been curious about this book for a while. Having seen it has had five star ratings from a number of reviewers I thought it must be something rather more substantial than an advert for a very reputable store. I was wrong - it's a high quality glossy brochure of the type that reputable brands like Bang and Olufsen, Cartier or Bentley provide their serious customers or serious intended customers free of charge.

I can only presume that the intention here was to do the same but that some wag thought about flogging it on Amazon. It's disappointing because Grays is 'only' a store - a unique one may be - but not special; Nikon owners are not like those of Leica who would pay the proverbial King's ransom for anything branded with the logo. We are more circumspect and, as there is nothing in there to further my knowledge of Nikon nor my photography (and Grays is not an old established firm in any case) there is nothing to justify £25.

It would be a treasured item if given away, to charge is rather like charging a significant amount for a carrier bag. We don't pay for store's advertising.

What an absurd book. This is, in short, nothing more than an extended magazine editorial about a Nikon shop in an iffy suburb of London. Rather like the same in Hello or one of the other celebrity mags the emphasis is on style over substance. Why a store merely a couple of decades old wants to appear in this anachronistic way is beyond me and, judging by the number of returns, (now available for resale) many other disgruntled readers too.

Why one star? The book looks good and is well produced. However the author is more suited to romantic fictional work than this (see her other Amazon entries). Though, hold on a minute - perhaps this is exactly why she was taken on to write this. She's successfully romanticised a camera shop. Well done!
