Review

'Exacto is a grammar book with a difference. There are conventional features such as verb tables that one would expect in any grammar, but there are also significant differences derived from the pedagogical approaches pioneered by the distance-teaching Open University in the United Kingdom that make this grammar book stand out from its rivals...I can recommend this book - and I have now ordered it, as I want it to have a permanent place on my bookshelves. No doubt I will be turning to it again and again as I write more and more in Spanish'
Greville Rumble, Professor of Distance Education Management
Amazon

Through the use of thoughtful and helpful visual displays, (Exacto) provides a user-friendly tool more suited to intermediate-level students of Spanish.
MLR

This book is very good. The grammatical explanations which incorporate important points and sections about Latin-American Spanish, are very clear and attractive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exacto - to the point 21 Aug 2002

Format:Paperback
Exacto is a grammar book with a difference. There are conventional features such as verb tables that one would expect in any grammar, but there are also significant differences derived from the pedagogical approaches pioneered by the distance-teaching Open University in the United Kingdom that make this grammar book stand out from its rivals. The authors, who all work in the department of modern languages at the Open University, demonstrate the pedagogical skills that are so typical of many of this University’s materials, and which make its products so useful to learners.
As someone whose education was disrupted across three countries, I missed out on any understanding of formal grammar until I was in my 20s when I began to write seriously in English. It was then that I began to see how important having such structure was to expressing oneself clearly. Now, trying to write in Spanish, I am very conscious, as I struggle to express complex ideas and shades of meaning, my need to understand the structures of the language, from its basics to its more obscure points, is clear. So in approaching this book and deciding whether it was worth buying, I asked myself if it would help me.
I found its down-to-earth explanations of the structure of the grammar, spread throughout the book but brought together usefully in summary form in a glossary at the beginning, useful. Those whose understanding of the formal structure of grammar is strong will no doubt be able to skip quite a lot because this book starts with the very basics – assuming little formal knowledge of the language.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Exacting 23 April 2012
By Jikky
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a very comprehensive and "exacting" book about all aspects of Spanish grammar. It covers 13 of the 14 verb tenses - I've never seen a book that covers that elusive 14th tense! It tells you whether a section is level 1,2 or 3. So from these points, it's a good reference book for people really serious about Spanish.
BUT:
Be prepared to have to gen up on English Grammar, because it's full of things like: "psychological distancing from the referent", "enclitic", "periphrastic constructions", and "object pronouns are appended to the imperative form when it is affirmative". Why can't it just say: "object pronouns are added onto the end of a command when it's positive"?
Quite complex level 3 aspects are in sections which have been squashed into the least amount of space in which to explain them. As a result, for me anyway, they become unfathomable. I've then had to go find a Spanish grammar website to explain them more fully and in a more student-friendly manner. The section on the Imperative is THE worst explanation I've come across and as for the Subjunctive tenses, well, I gave up because my own notes are much better!
In short, much of this book is explained more simply elsewhere.
Buy it if you're serious about grammar, but use it with other sources and don't let it put you off Spanish. Let's face it - who the heck speaks English with perfect grammar thesedays?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Grammer Book 22 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a really informative and easy to read grammer book. I have been studying spanish for a while and have several grammer books that I have purchased over the years. I had to buy this as it was one of my set books for my O.U. course. I am so glad I did. If you only buy one grammer book I would advise you to make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exacto a great grammar reference 30 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
The book is a set text for the Open University but is in every way comprehensive. My wife speaks spanish and she has been reading to refresh her grammar skills and understanding of parts of the language.

The approach is skilful as it uses a building block approach to ease you in to the study. Whilst I have yet to pass the course I am firmly of the view that this up to date book will be a valuable tool in my progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and Informative 17 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
The way the rules of the language are explained is short and simple, and easy to understand. The tables are excellent to revise from. It covers everything from the basics (i.e. gender & number) to the more difficult aspects of Spanish. The questions at the end of each unit are also very good at solidifying your understanding of what you've just read. Overall, 5*.
