I bought this splitter recently to enable a PS3 and a Sky+ HD to connect their optical digital outputs to a JVC TH-M303 Home Cinema system which only has one optical digital audio input.
I wasn't aware that such devices as this switch existed until I did a search online. I'm glad I found this because I was seriously thinking that I might have to invest in a new home cinema/amp that had multiple optical audio inputs. No need!
I chose this model as opposed to the two port version in case I needed to connect a third optical output device later.
I've been using this switch for over a month now, and it has been great. It's easy to use, simply connect the optical cable in the output side connector to your audio output device/amplifier/home cinema system, and cables from the devices you wish to output into the inputs on the other side of the switch. In fact, I didn't need to explain this because its obvious how to set it up.
It comes with a set of cables for free, which is a real time and money saver.
Any concerns over the switch are:
1) Sometimes when switching to a port the signal doesn't always line up correctly through the device meaning an intermittent or broken audio. This is not a big deal because its a case of jiggling the switch knob to fix it, its user-error more than anything and once positioned, the connection never breaks or drops.
2) The design of the switch meaning the cables going in one side and out the other means the switch is deep, its also silver with a huge purple/lavender switch. So basically its not a particularly discreet design.
Conclusion.
It's great value especially compared to the altenative of buying new expensive equipment.
The sound quality is excellent as far my equipment allows but I'm not much of an audiophile.
This switch means that you can enjoy the Sky+ HD Dolby Digital movies as intended, and (more importantly!) the digital sound from the PS3 means that games sound better and more involving than before, and of course Blu-Ray movies are vastly improved.
I don't need to go back to stereo RCA/phono connectors anymore!
Highly recommended.
