Previously I have tried an infra-red based remote control but under strong sunlight and/or longer distances the results were hit and miss. This wireless device provides more freedom and distance from the camera for nature photography as well as for more informal portraiture and still life. Very simple and straightforward to get to grips with and it sits neatly on the camera hotshoe (or less elegantly dangles from a cable). Worth the extra money for the enjoyment and flexibility. A theoretical problem that I have yet to encounter is co-channel interference with other wi-fi devices able to use the same licence-free frequencies - but youcan always change your channel for this natty device! So, unless you are certain you are going to be indoors and close to your camera, I would avoid infra-red devices line this one - Canon RS-60E3 compatible Infrared remote switch for Canon EOS 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 1000D

The Giga T Pro wireless release is an excellent addition to my photo bag. The box contains four parts; a tripod head adaptor which recieves signals from the radio remote control and two wires one to 3 pin connector for pro gear and one 2.5mm connector for consumer kit. This is excellent for people who have moved up through teh canon range from a 400 to a 40d or who have one of the fantastic pro pocket cameras like the Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera (10 Megapixel, 5x Optical Zoom) 2.8 inch LCD.
Besides having a long open air range (i have tried it at about 30m and it was still working fine) the T-pro is programmable to act as an intervalometer for time lapse photos; or you can program in delays before taking images. The remote control supports half depression to focus as well as full bulb capabilities; including programmed bulb timings - you can set the camera to take a 30 second exposure and press the button once. The wireless remote is far more convenient than a cabled remote; removing the last trace of shake from a tripod mounted camera at night; and the programmed modes / intervalometer make it worth the extra cost over the canon wireless modes.
I dinked a point for a the batteries they have used; and how they are confgiured. The main body of the camera uses CR2 lithium batteries; these are nicely behind a removable / loseable cover. You can get CR2 batteries in Boots but whilst wondering the world they aren't going to be so easy to find; so take a spare. The remote uses a CR2032 calculator battery; and its sealed behind tiny screws so i hope that it lasts a long time as i don't want to travel with watchmakers screwdrivers on me.

This is a great timer, it comes with cables to use a jack plug (400D etc) or the three pin plug (5Dmk 2 etc). It fits on the hotshoe (although this is to keep it tidy and not necessary, say if you are using a flash on the shoe already) and plugs into the socket at the side of the camera. The controller is separate and I have used it both for time lapse and for remote shooting.
The range of the controller was about 30 paces outside when I tested it, but I've not needed to use it at this range in practice.
I use the controller mainly for time lapse and it has worked well every time. The controller is easy to use and straightforward.
There is one disadvantage - the reciever does not have auto power off (how would it know the controller is not about to talk to it?) so I did have the battery go flat in my bag when it turned on accidently. I now transport it with the battery removed, but this is not a great hardship.
The controller uses a button battery and the reciever uses a CR2 battery, both seem to last some time as I have not yet needed to replace, except for the issue above.
