5.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this, 7 Mar 2005
By MR J P ALVEY (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Basically if you're a diehard comics nut or someone disinterested in the medium this is for you. Vaughan & Harris succeed almost effortlessly in tying superheroics, soap opera and political drama together to create a hybrid with strong characterisation, subtle humour and intriguing subplots. What if your friendly neighbourhood superhero actually ran for office and actually won?! This is a slice in his life, and those of everyone around him, his advisors, his colleagues, friends and fellow New Yorkers.

Buy it - trust me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Brian K Vaughan's best - but not to be missed, 11 Jan 2005
I have been a huge fan of Brian K. Vaughan's comics since I first read the Hood and Y: the last man. Ex Machina continues his tradition of interesting and intriguing comics.

Ex Machina follows the story of Mayor Hundred, a retired superhero who has become Mayor of New York. The comic combines an interesting mix between what is happening as Mayor of New York and flashbacks to who he was and what he did as his alter ego: The Great Machine, while exploring the main character's frustration with both sides of his life - his inability to tackle things directly as mayor, and his frustration at his inability to really make a difference as a superhero.

The story also hold a lot of promise for future installments, as the book leaves a lot of unanswered questions, particularly about how the Great Machine got his power to talk and give orders to machines.

The artwork by Tony Harris in the comic is universally good, with some occasional truly fantastic panels.

While in my opinion this graphic novel is not as gripping as some of Brian K. Vaughans other work, it is definitely one of a kind and should not be missed.
