Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Evolution is a collection of Dead or Alive's singles for Epic, including their debut "Misty Circles"; their first hit, the KC-cover "That's The Way (I Like It)"; their trans-Atlantic Stock, Aitken and Waterman-produced smash "You Spin Me Round"; and several poorly received late-1980s offerings including "Come Home with Me Baby" and "Turn Round and Count 2 Ten" (the last two having been given a righteous 2003 freshen-up). As expected, the early hits, frantic pop updates of Giorgio Moroder's lush arrangements and insistent sexual rhythms still stand out. As do frontman Pete Burns' wit and flamboyance, which made him a major star in Japan years after the UK scene had so foolishly left him behind. --Dominic Wills

Product Description

DEAD OR ALIVE Evolution (2003 UK 18-track CD album featuring a much deserved collection of all the greatest moments from the over the top grandiose and just a bit rude 80s icons and includes lost hits from Non-UK albums new mixes and the classic hits You Spin Me Round & Brand New Lover)

While the selection of songs here surely can't be faulted, some diehard DOA fans might object to the extensive remixing that has been done in places -"My Heart Goes Bang", for example, is almost unrecognisable from the version on "Youthquake", although personally I think this particular remix is fantastic too. Generally the songs have been given a respectful dusting off rather than a complete overhaul (with the single exception of a wholly unnecessary remix of "You Spin Me Round", which is only emphasized by the inclusion of the original version) and the running order works very well. Pete Burns's sleeve notes make good reading, but I can't help wishing that a few of the older photos had been included in the cd booklet - nothing wrong with the 2003 version of Pete, but a few Eighties and Nineties pics in there too would have been good. But this is a pretty trivial point about what is basically a brilliant album - part of the reason I've since started buying up the DOA back catalogue is simply because I've overplayed "Evolution" so much.

Bombastic, theatrical, dramatic, and always underpinned by Pete Burns' amazing operatic howl of a voice, this is a good introduction to one of the UK's most underrated pop bands.

Dead Or Alive have always straddled the goth/camp and usually pretty successfully. Pete has proved he can write and sing great pop songs, often with a delicious sense of humour, and Steve's production and overall support in later years should never be underestimated. They are a classic act of their time, and hopefully their time will continue! The standard classics are here, which is what we'd expect, albeit a couple of them in unfamiliar form (ie not 7" versions). Brand New Lover is extended but not the 12" or LP edit, What I Want is almost the original 12" version, which is nice to have on CD, and the overall selection shows their new material can kick it in today's teen-dominated market. For those that are into it there are several photos of Pete included, in various wigs and expressions - a few less and a few better ones might have been a good move, and no sign of Steve atall, or even a group photo from the mid 80s as part of their 'history'. Minor quibbles - overall this is a great best-of sampler. There are always odd omissions or inclusions, and this set stands up better than most. However Sony have slipped up chronically and state two tracks are 2003 remixes - they are in fact the previously released millenium versions from the Japanese release "Fragile" (the details have been corrected for the Japanese release of Evolution though, they boast the originals!). As such some production notes are awry, but these aside this compilation is fairly definitive, and well worth a listen/look.

As you can see the tracklisting has all their UK hit singles plus an interesting choice of extras including International Crisis's Rebel Rebel. This would be an excellent DVD but it's spoilt by very poor sound quality on about 3 tracks especially 'Lover Come Back To Me'. It's a shame this has happened and I'm amazed how this got past quality control. When you buy something new you shouldn't get this. With the menu backing track being much louder than the rest of the DVD it makes the whole thing irritating to get through as you continually have to adjust your volume. This DVD gives the impression it's been thrown together. My DOA VHS video and 7" singles leave this standing on sound quality. This is still a must have for fans but spoilt by poor sound on a few tracks.
