Set in a small Texan town in 1899 `The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate' is an entertaining first book by Jacqueline Kelly. When 11 year old Calpurnia is not allowed to borrow a copy of Charles Darwin's controversial `Origin of Species' from her local library she discovers not only that her grandfather has a copy at home but that he knows the great man. Her relationship with her grandfather develops as together they explore and record the natural history around their farm.
Kelly paints a witty picture of family life in Texas at the close of the 19th century as scientifically minded Calpurnia fights against the expectations that she makes knitted socks, tatted collars and the dreaded apple pies.
I really enjoyed this book: the unfamiliar setting was interesting and informative, and I felt I really got to know Calpurnia. For me a sign of a good book is wanting to know what happens next to the characters, so I hope Jacqueline Kelly is planning a sequel.

For young minds of an enquiring bent, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a wonderful find, equivalent to coming across a butterfly or brightly-coloured bug that you have never seen before. It is a modern-day 'Charlotte's Web', with an emphasis on insects rather than pig-saving arachnids, and a very welcome addition to the genre.

The book has a good main character and tackles the theory of evolution from a child's perspective. A good read.
