5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 4 May 2007
By TeensReadToo TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
EVIL STAR is the second book in the Anthony Horowitz series called THE GATEKEEPERS.

In book one, titled RAVEN'S GATE, main character Matt discovers he is one of five specially chosen teens. Their purpose is to save the world. Matt doesn't know the other five and must "close" Raven's Gate on his own. As the second book, EVIL STAR, begins, Matt finds himself in Peru meeting up with Pedro, who turns out to be one of the chosen five.

Matt and Pedro join forces, although it isn't easy since Matt speaks only English and Pedro speaks Spanish. Their unusual connection does allow them to communicate while in a dream state. They learn each others' stories and realize that their paths will someday cross the paths of their remaining team.

Together Matt and Pedro must find and prevent the opening of the second gate. Its history is intertwined with the ancient Incas and the Peruvian culture. As they search the seamier side of Peru, they encounter kidnapping, gun battles, the evil "big headed" Salamanda, high altitude jungle treks, and terrifying helicopter rides. Exactly what is the Evil Star and can they find the next gate in time to close it and save the world from the Old Ones?

Horowitz provides his usual fast-paced, non-stop action in this new series. It is sure to impress his already established fans and create plenty of new ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars EVIL yet brilliant 5 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
After reading RAVEN'S GATE, the itch to read the second book was to hard to ignore. It is absolutely brilliant. It is longer and the action is better. The plot really comes into its own and I look forward to reading NIGHTRISE, the third book in the series released in april.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back and better! 6 May 2006
Format:Paperback
Raven's Gate makes its much anticipated return in this next thrilling installment Evil Star, 2nd in the 'Power of 5' series.

As always Horrorwitz writes a cracker novel that kept me reading to the final full stop. This book was thrilling, action packed and clever till the very end.

Matt is back but life with Richard isn't as appealing as he thought. Life at school and home is a misery and it isn't too long before he decides to rejoin LEAF. But before he can even mention it an explosive turn of events lands Matt in Peru where he finds himself in a fantastic and chilling set of events. Barely in the country he he separated from Richard and is on the run from the police, it isn't long before he runs into a young boy called Pedro. Reluctantly Pedro stays with him helping Matt trhough his desperate search to find Richard.

HOwever Peru isn't as innocent as it seems. Evil forces are at work and with more twists and turns you can shake a stick at, Horrorwitz pulls Matt and Pedro together through more than they bargined.

This book is absolutely brilliant. The change of scenery is a fresh breath of air from England and the flavour of Preu gives the book an exotic and exciting touch. As always the style is gripping and easy on the eyes. Matt continues to struggle with his powers and in an explosive ending you are left gasping for the next book.

Horrorwitz described this series as 'bringing magic into real life without dragons and wizards' and he has certainly done it. This series is so different from anything I've read and I love it. I recommend it to anyone who has read the first book and anyone who enjoys a good mystery thriller.

A big thumbs up to Evil Star, may the next installment come soon!
