There's nothing better than finding a good new series character in the thriller genre. Elena Forbes' Mark Tartaglia, a London murder squad detective, fits the bill very satisfactorily. He's a bit like an English version of Connolly's Harry Bosch, set in a realistic West London backdrop.
Tartaglia is faced with a sadistic murderer who mutilates his victims using the unkindest cut of all - castration - but the motivation is unclear. The story is a gripping one and involves a satisfyingly complex number of strands, including a couple of very unexpected plot twists before the exciting denouement. The characters are highly believable and the relationships and interaction between them are as interesting as the storyline; an essential part of a good thriller.
Now I look forward to enjoying the other two in the series...

The book, the first I've read from this author, is gripping, well-written and a fine addition to the crime genre. I will be buying other titles by her.

A corpse, dumped and even worse hossiby mutilated, then another.... DI
Tartaglia has to unravel the victm's past to find some link to help hi solve these horrendous crimes that seem to project revenge killing. It is an excellent crime novel and great to see another fairly new UK author taking on the crime scene in a jack the ripper style. ADmittedly the scenes portrayed are graphic, but come on, we who are addicted to murder/mysteries are used to confronting these scenes by now. It serves to heighten the chilling scene and one that we know must be solved. This is a really good book that keeps you on edge unti the last pages. I had not read anything by Ms Forbes before now and I willhave to backtrack over her last novels. This is well worth a read but not too late at night!!!!Evil in Return: He's coming and there's nowhere to hide

High octane murder mystery
It's always great when you discover a really good new writer. I hadn't come across Forbes's work before but the blurb on the cover looked interesting and I wasn't disappointed. Read more
