Book Description

Evil in the Land Without was Colin Cotterill's second novel first published in 2003 by Asia Books.

John Jessel is an English Child Protection Unit detective working on paedophile cases in Surrey. He's good at his job but is on a downhill slide as booze slowly takes over his deteriorating body and his lonely life. His recent case has got out of control. Postcards signed 'The Paw' have taken credit for the murders of several children. But The Paw also seems to know too much about John and his family. There are threats against his sister Susan, her son Eddo, and their mother. John is forced to hide them while he follows the scarce clues in the case.

Dr. Shirley Heigh is a Karen intern returning from the States to work on the Burmese border. But her intentions are not wholly ethical. There is a great wrong from her past that she has to right before she can be content to die. The evil that haunts Shirley's past is the same evil that is haunting John's present. It is an evil that began in the Karen homeland of Kawthoolei and has spread through Africa before finally homing in on the Jessel family.

Burmese general Bohmu Din, has a sexual liking for young children, he also has good reason for seeing the Jessels dead. He has dedicated over twenty years to finding, and eliminating them. But the reason for his hatred is buried deep in British government files, and in order for John to uncover it, he needs to get his mind and body in shape. His search takes him to Kenya, to Thailand and to Burma.

While he is away, Bohmu Din slowly breaks down the barriers of secrecy that protect Susan and Eddo. Heading in the same direction, looking for the same thing, it's only a matter of time before the paths of Dr. Shirley Heigh and John Jessel cross. Together, they are able to piece together some missing parts of the puzzle. Yet understanding doesn't simplify their search. They are fighting a foe who orchestrates their every move. To Bohmu Din it is a game he can win whenever he pleases.

... the Karen of the Thai-Burmese Frontier gave to their now long lost territory.
And when wee Sherri in 1978 will be raptured by Burman officials, the life of many persons will change - and not only to the positive...

In 1978 at the Thai-Burmesee border of "Evil in the Land Without" some of the real main characters will have their first encounters. But after this, all the five continents are only a playground for the traders of especially young girls.

Colin Cotteril - normally known as the creator of Dr Siri, the Laotian (Ex-)Coroner - has created with this eBook a thriller that has as its main theme a - today - very much abused one - the traffic of minors, their distribuition all around the globe and their abuse until they die...But in 2003, when the book was written, the fight against paedophiles was at its beginnings.

This is a book - a thriller - that non spares really NOTHING to the protagonists and even less to the reader.
If You have read Dr Siri books - forget them - this is totally another stuff!
But Colin Cotterill knows exactly how to make us readers understand, that "Youth has to be protected".
Because if we aren't able to protect our little ones, we are worth less than beasts...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 7 May 2014

From the plot summary I am not sure I would have read this had I not loved the Dr Siri and Jimm series. But again Cotterill has written a winner. Couldn't put it down as I neared the end. Despite the subject matter there is still humour, and the characters show great originality. Maybe some of the plot includes thriller clichés but this doesn't matter as it's done so well.

5.0 out of 5 stars International Detective Story 6 Mar. 2014

I really liked the Cop Character - John Jessel - pity Colin didn't go on to do a series of stories with him as main protagonist as he did with Dr Siri.

A really strong story - moving across several countries covering a difficult but very important subject - a MUST read for any Colin Cotterill fans - no wonder he went on to win "Dagger" Award

4.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced and engaging read 1 Jan. 2014

Having read most of Colin Cotteril's other books I thought I would give this a go, and am glad I did. Although it is a slightly more conventional thriller than his other books, you still get flashes of Cotteril's trademark wit shining through. The story is fast paced, written in a readable style and keeps you gripped till the end. If you like Colin Cotteril's previous books, or if you just want a page turning, enjoyable and easy read, you could do a lot worse than this book.

I can't read enough of Colin Cotterill and I love Jimm's dysfunctional family. I do hope he continues to write about her and her crime solving journalist adventures. Very entertaining and good twist at the end.
