This review is from: Evil Dead Trap [DVD] (DVD)
the movie is pretty entertaining i thought. i cant say anything about the british version in terms of quality of transfer or extras. but its missing some violence. so go with the american dvd from synapse (code 0 with an audio commentary) or the dutch version from japan shock.

interesting concept, but very boring..., 29 Nov 2005
This review is from: Evil Dead Trap [DVD] (DVD)
The story and the concept behind it was unique and very eye opening, but the film had no pace and in places dragged on and on when it should have been editted.
The gore wasn't mindless and was in fitting with the film. One mindless sex scene and one mindless rape scene though.
By the last hour I was yawning and loosing interest in the whole thing.
It could have been a very good film, but it was way off mark.

Nami Tsuchiya(Miyuki Ono)is the host of 'Late,Late Night', a television show that encourages its audience to send in controversial videos that will be shown on air. Nami recieves one such tape in the post but is shocked to discover that it shows the brutal murder of a woman. Despite warnings from collegues, Nami sets off in search of a story in the company of four of her work collegues. They follow the route shown on the 'snuff' video. The trail leads to an abandoned military base, where Nami and company soon find themselves in terrible danger from an unknown assailant who likes to play with his victims before they are killed. Will anybody make it out alive.
Hideo Nakata's 'Ringu' is widely acknowledged as the film that put Asian horror back on the map, not only kick starting a revival in the Asian horror film, but breathing new life into the horror genre throughout the world. However, this film and Japanese Zombie film 'Junk' were made a few years previous to 'Ringu' and both showed important developments in the Asian horror film.
Evil Dead Trap is a very different beast to Ringu and the other supernatural shockrs that came in its wake. It has the look and the feel of an Italian horror, with its fog shrouded scenes interspersed with very gory set pieces and the obligatory synth score. It even points a maggot infested finger in the direction of Lucio Fulci. However, it is so much more than that. Not only does it reference past masters such as Argento, and also use some standard horror cliches it looks forward to subsequent successful franchises such as Saw and its sequels.
Evil Dead Trap is really a film in three acts. The first act leads the film in the direction of a tense investigation into the world of snuff movies, once they enter the deserted base it becomes a gory, inventive slasher. The comes the third act. Ah yes, the third act that in my opinion raises the film from very good to quite brilliant. It's a great twist that could have backfired but thanks to the directors' skill works perfectly.
My only gripe is a protracted, rather gratuitous rape scene that occurs half an hour or so into the film. I found this scene rather distracted from the tension the film was building and detracted from the effectiveness of the rest of the film. I suppose the ame could be said for the gore quotent but I was in too much admiration of the great special effects to care whether it was over te top.
All in all, Evil Dead Trap is a really enjoyable Japanese horror that crosses the borders of various horror sub-genres during its running time. As for the extras on this disc, well they consist of the obligatory credits lists and a stills gallery.
A nice surprise as the film exceeded my expectations. 5 out of 5
