So the new EVIL DEAD is here. The original 1982 movie was a groundbreaking & original film. And this remake is a total success because it DOESN'T try to imitate the original frame by frame. That would have been lazy and pointless as the 1982 film, in my view, was impossible to improve upon.
This new version retains all the atmosphere, has an unnerving & superbly original upside down opening scene of the car heading for the cabin ( loved that) & the subtle changes are evident throughout the movie but the good thing is that THEY WORK and are a refreshing & welcome change. I was sceptical at first about the movie but this remake is as good as or even better than Sam Raimi's original film. Cleverly the original beige Buick car is seen in this film, the shocks are startling & is it scary? Brilliantly so. The gore is plentiful & the possessed characters are nightmarish.
I love this film because it clearly has respect for the original. Being produced by Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert & Bruce Campbell is a clear sign as to why this film is a total success. 10 out of 10 from me. A rare score for a remake? I think so !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great... 17 Dec 2013
I made the mistake of believing the hype surrounding this movie and was left a bit underwhelmed by it all.
Positives - it doesn't try to be a remake of the original, but a stand alone movie in its own right. It doesn't rely on CGI effects, preferring good old fashioned prosthetics (the electric carving knife scene is a corker!). The cast are effective (if a little un memorable) and the sets are terrific.
Negatives - no central character you want to root for. Not very scary for a movie that is supposed to be "The most terrifying film you will ever experience". An abrupt ending that made me ask "Is that it?"
All in all, well made but not the terror-fest I hoped it would be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a bog standard remake. 3 Nov 2013
By D. keir
I was searching for a good horror film to watch, and reluctantly chose this one. The reason for my reluctance was i have seen the original and most remakes are awful especially in the horror genre. At first my fears were met. I found the characters to be the young, pretty kind you would find in some high school drama. You know the kind of horror film you would find some adolescent boys watching with their girlfriends, so a cheesy and light hearted horror aimed at teens.
It turned out this film was drenched with blood curling gore. More surprisingly original gory scenes that are both unexpected and shocking. You'll find yourself turning from the screen and feeling the characters suffering. It's not just the gore though which most horror fans are desensitized too. This film has what most horror films fail to portray and that is a haunted atmosphere of genuine suspense and apprehension.
Anyone who who would be put off by it being a remake, should rest assured that with a few small changes, this could be an original stand alone film.

4.0 out of 5 stars different.... well not really 4 April 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
A lot of the bad stuff from Raimi's original has gone, so has a lot of the good stuff. try not to compare and you'll enjoy this, for the realism of the gore alone it's worth watching, as good as I've ever seen. the final scene is truly spectacular even if the whole idea seems so clichéd with so many wannabes between the original and this...

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a remake worth watching. 24 Oct 2013
When I first heard about the idea of a remake of the classic horror movie, The Evil Dead, I was in uproar. When I heard original producers, Sam Raimi, Robert Tarpert and Bruce Campbell were overseeing the project, I was intrigued. Then I saw the Red Band trailer and became excited. But then I heard nothing but bad reviews, so this put me off a visit to the cinema. I finally picked it up on DVD,as it's fairly cheap and if I enjoyed it, may splash out on Blu Ray for the collection. I will be buying the Blu Ray.
In terms of extra, there isn't much going on except a couple of making of documentaries and commentaries. But the film itself was better than I was expecting.
The premise of the film is still the same as the original and there are many scenes that pay homage to both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2. The characters are given different names in the 2013 version, but the relationship between them is the same. The motivation for heading to the cabin is more modern and more believable than the original, but there is no real explanation as to how the Book of the Dead wound up in the cabin, even with the prologue(In the original the cabin belongs to a professor of ancient history who found the book on an excavation and brought it back to the cabin to study). And he finale is different to the original too, but other than that the movie pretty much parallel to the original.
I read the following criticisms. No Bruce Campbell - this is true, but this is remake, not a sequel. Would audiences respect an actor in his late 50s playing a character in their early 20s? The movie doesn't have the same comedy as the original and is too serious - not sure whee the idea of The Evil Dead being a comedy has come from.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite horror 16 Aug 2013
It wasnt scary...But it was very gory. Unlike the original it didnt try to be funny, no ridiculous humour, or impossibilities.
This reboot is secretly a sequel. But it is very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you go down to the woods today.....................
What went in its favour was not to redo the original. You just can't recreate let alone better a Sam Raimi film, and nobody could carry off Bruce Campbell period. Read more
