Gripping film., 3 Jan 2006
This review is from: Evil [DVD] (DVD)
A true story, set only 15 years after WWII, this is a stunning and shocking film about a young man who, after frequent physical abuse from his stepfather, becomes the schoolyard bully. When he is expelled, he is sent by his mother to a tough Private school, which turns out to be tougher than anyone could possible expect. Some of the teachers are still Nazi's, and the teachers ignore the ritual violence that the school seniors impose on the younger students. This is Eric's last chance in the school system, and has to fight to his core not to react to the violence, but because of the years of abuse he has sustained, he is able to switch off to it. When the bully's recognise this, they becomes more and more extreme, eventually striking out at those he loves in an effort to get to him. The film is very well directed and all the performances are excellent.
Interesting extras, particularly the interviews with the writer (who's autobiographical book the film is based on).
And whilst this has nothing to do with the film, Andreas Wilson who plays the lead, is perhaps one of the most beautiful men to grace the screen, and I look forward to seeing more from him.
This film was nominated for Best International Film at the 2004 Oscars!

Unmissable, 2 Jun 2007
This review is from: Evil [DVD] (DVD)
I was unsure about this as it started not having much experience of Scandinavian cinema - luckily, as last year I was blown away by "Festen" I had the good sense to stick with "Evil" as the story slowly unfolded.
By 20 minutes in, I was riveted. Andreas Wilson is a serious talent and I'll be watching out for his next movie with keen interest. He perfected portryaing Eriks quiet exterior while in his eyes it was all to easy to see the hidden strength and resilience in the character which would be his salvation.
I have since bought this on DVD to add to my collection and loaned it out to everyone I can think of - I've yet to hear anything negative about this film and it has even converted some "anti-subtitles/anti-foreign film" friends of mine into being a little more adventurous in their movie choices from now on!!
All I can say is rent it - even if it's like nothing you've ever watched before, give it a shot (and then go rent "Festen" too!!)

excellent film, 5 April 2007
brilliant film which is based on a true story of the author - about a difficult boy who is sent to an elite public (ie private) school in sweden where the treatment by other boys (who exert discipline) is to say the least harsh. Added to that he has a stepfather from hell who regularly beats him with a cane. The title means "evil-ness", and the film really explores it - very good indeed.
