Product Description

"The phone in the hall jangled suddenly; Becca started, then, as her husband went to answer it, clenched her fists on the table and took several deep breaths. It couldn't be the man, she told herself: he had never rung while Stephen was at home. But almost inevitably whenever Stephen was away, the phone would ring and it would be that voice. Soft-spoken, relaxed and just beyond identification. It always began the same - he would ask after her welfare, a friendly and concerned parishioner. And then would come the unspeakable questions, the suggestions, the fantasies. The filth. There was no way to stop it: if she put the phone down, he would only ring again, with a mild, injured rebuke for her discourtesy and continue where he had left off. It wasn't possible to ignore the phone, either - what if it were someone in urgent need of the Rector?"
'Peaceful' is the most common entry in the visitors' book of fifteenth-century St Michael's Church, with its glorious angel roof and its medieval Doom painting. But outside the church, and under the surface, peaceful is scarcely the word for the tiny Norfolk village of Walston. The Rector's new bride, Becca Thorncroft, is receiving phone calls so unpleasant that her very sanity is at stake, and the newest residents of Walston, Gillian English and Lou Sutherland, are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Then sudden, gruesome death shatters even the outward peace of Walston. Fortunately for Father Stephen Thorncroft, his friends Lucy Kingsley and David Middleton-Brown are on hand to sort through the tangled relationships and dark motivations of the villagers, uncovering more than they bargain for. But it is not until a little girl goes missing that the final, deadly pieces fall into place in their search for the evil angels among them.

Traditional whodunit 11 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Malicious telephone calls, poisoning, a missing child and the politics of the parish council, all set against the backdrop of a sleepy Norfolk village. It's a good thing the vicar knows David Middleton-Brown and his girlfriend Lucy Kingsley.

Sorry if I sound a bit jaded but I do find David and Lucy, a solicitor and an artist, a bit irksome. Twee, irksome and dated in fact. Having read four books in the series (though this is the first I've reviewed) I find that they haven't grown on me and I'm now at the point where I'd hide if I saw them coming down the street. I also find the vicar and his wife close to being indistinguishable from every other vicar and his wife Kate Charles writes about.

The book isn't bad. It flows nicely with a good complex plot and enough drama to keep you turning the pages. That's about it, a traditional whodunit that relies on the plot and carries about enough characterisation and atmosphere to get by, but not to stick in the mind. First published in 1995,it could be 1935 or 1955, as modern issues (apart from a strange fascination with homosexuality that runs through most of her books) seem to pass by this book unheeded. We have a rebellion about paying the Quota to the Diocese and the election of churchwardens but neither is really developed. It could be better. To be fair some of the others have been better.

Don't move here!!!! 12 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Should you happen to be an Anglican and are contemplating a move to a quiet country parish, for heavens sake don't move here.

The inhabitants of this particular parish would have any new incumbant of a right thinking disposition, taking to the hills after the first week among them.

I found myself despairing but fascinated at the same time.

First off, there are the obscene phone calls the poor clergy wife has to endure (why?) A good dose of short shrift would have cured that problem early on. Why on earth didn't the poor girl tell her husband, not to mention BT who, have strategies for coping with this kind of nuisance.

Add to this, the ladies of the church flower group. Intolerent evil minded and downright bitchy, it's a wonder any floral displays they were responsible for didn't wilt at first touch.

Then we have an oversexed policeman. Anything on two legs and vaguely female is fair game to him. Having worked for the constabulary, I realise that testosterone does flow quite freely at times if not sharply checked but, this guy needs therapy. Obviously the women on his watch aren't handy enough with the upward knee thrust.

There's lots more but, I'll sum up. The book is overdesigned, plotted and the characters are not believable.

This was especially good, showing that just because people are deep within the church they are not all good angels, but evil as well!
