Product Description

Review

"This guide provides an integration of recommended practices and up-to-date evidence for CBT across a range of disorders. Particular (and novel) strengths include accurate and brief summaries of the science concerning CBT, along with discussions of the nuts and bolts of setting up a practice, relevant cultural and contextual issues, and useful strategies in assessment and intervention. The book is clearly written and highly accessible. Dobson and Dobson are to be congratulated on doing exactly what the title suggests by providing a valuable, well-balanced introductory guide to science and practice." - Edward Watkins, Mood Disorders Centre, School of Psychology, University of Exeter, UK

"A unique contribution to the clinical literature. This book provides valuable guidance on how to carry out cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) effectively. It would serve as an excellent text for courses on CBT for practicing clinicians. Cutting across disorders, Dobson and Dobson show how CBT can be used with virtually any client. They include valuable instruction on often-overlooked techniques, such as behavioral activation and social skills training. They also address challenges and controversies in clinical training and the dissemination of evidence-based practices. This is a book for everyone interested in the science and practice of CBT." - Deborah Roth Ledley, Children’s Center for OCD and Anxiety, Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, USA

Product Description

From leading experts in the field – a practicing clinical psychologist and a renowned psychotherapy researcher – this book synthesizes the evidence base for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and translates it into practical clinical guidelines. The focus is how clinicians can use current research findings to provide the best care in real-world practice settings. Within a case formulation framework, core cognitive and behavioral theories and techniques are described and illustrated with vivid case examples. The authors also discuss managing everyday treatment challenges; separating CBT myths from facts; and how to develop a successful CBT practice and optimize the quality of services.

Basically, I find this one of the best introductions to CBT. It's a thorough overview and probably assumes some level of knowledge. However, it's written well, is well designed and presented, and contains some very useful nuggets of information, that go beyond a lot of the other introductory textbooks, some of which can be too vague or simplistic at times. I've frequently referred back to this book for information, which is usually a good sign.

This book was written well and has some basic, as well as well noted advice for the beginner CBT counselor. While the information becomes repetitive, it was worth the read.
