Evgeny Kissin was born in Moscow in October 1971 and began to play by ear and improvise on the piano at the age of two. At six years old, he entered a special school for gifted children, the Moscow Gnessin School of Music, where he was a student of Anna Pavlovna Kantor, who has remained his only teacher. At the age of ten, he made his concerto debut playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto K. 466 ... Read more in Amazon's Evgeny Kissin Store

Kissin's Chopin: Approaching Greatness 23 April 2014
By Johannes Climacus - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Evgeny Kissin's sensational Carnegie Hall debut in 1990 predicted greatness for a young pianist of astonishing maturity. Yet, as with many child prodigies, he has not quite lived up to his early promise. However, his consummate technical facility, sensitive control of tone and touch, and thoughtfully inflected phrasing are particularly well suited to the music of Chopin. This inexpensive box collects all of Kissin's live and studio Chopin recordings originally made for the RCA label. The sound, which was always alluring, has been remasted to excellent effect. What's not to love?

Among the many fine performances here, I would call attention to his sublime op. 49 Fantasie and unusually cogent traversal of the Third Piano Sonata from a Carnegie Hall recital of 1993. I purchased this CD when it was first issued, and these two items have worn particularly well. I would not hesitate to compare them to any versions by hallowed past masters of the keyboard. The same can be said for Kiaain'a astonishingly beautiful studio recordings of the Ballades, Berceuse, Barcarolle and Preludes. If I am reminded of Kissin's elder compatriot Gilels in the Sonata, I am even more struck by a similarity to Arrau in the other works mentioned. In fact, Kissin's gorgeous deep-in-the-keys tone, the bell-like resonance he elicits in the treble register, and his poignantly expressive (if at times calculated) phrasing often call to mind the great Chilean pianist's Chopin recordings. If you enjoy Arrau's way with this repertoire (I do), you will surely appreciate Kissin's as well. Indeed, Kissin's affinity with Chopin ensures that there are no disappointing performances on any of these well-filled discs, and many that approach greatness. Strongly recommended then, to pianophiles and others who may have wondered, concerning Kissin, what all the fuss is about.
what a disappointment! The sound of some of the instruments used ... 9 Sep 2014

I bought this CD Set for two reason: the quality of the artist and secondly the price, but once I listened to it,,,,,,,,,,,,what a disappointment! The sound of some of the instruments used was absolutely disgusting, especially the recording of the 28 Preludes, at the end of which the piano shows all of his poor sound quality. Shame on the person/s who provided such a poor instrument to one of the greatest pianist of the 20th century! For comparison I used Bach Two Part Inventions superbly interpreted by one of my favorite Bach interpreters: Mr.Till Fellner. This recording is a joy to listen to, from beginning to end and the instrument worked as a good piano is supposed to sound. I know nothing about music of the mechanics of the instrument, but I've been listening to classical music since I was in my teens (now in my 70's) and my ear can spot quality from the very beginning of any work. You don't have to have a PhD to tell when things are right. Mr. Kissing did not deserve such a disservice.

I have seen this amazing pianist once, I was completely entranced throughout his entire concert.
Listening to these 5 cd's in this box set has brought me great pleasure, it's a great selection of music and Kissin's style is just magic.
This will keep me happy until I can see him in concert again!
