Product Description

Product Description

Boxing Day, Melbourne 2010: a packed house of over 80,000 sits down to watch the crucial fourth Test unfold. Three days later, only 12,000 remain - and it's just the Barmy Army, celebrating as England retain the Ashes. They run through their full repertoire of songs, cheering on England's success. Meanwhile, the England players salute those who have made the effort to be there, spending thousands of pounds to support their side, inspiring them to another great victory. What was it like to be there? How did it come to pass that thousands gathered together? Who is the trumpeter? Who came up with the songs? What else do the Barmy Army get up to when the cricket finishes? This book answers all those questions, and many more, providing a brilliant and hilarious insight to life on tour with the Barmy Army. For those who were there, it will bring back a flood of memories. For those who weren't, this book will show you what you missed, and why you need to join in next time to have the time of your life.

My first cricket tour abroad was to Australia 2002/3 where at the MCG 10,000 England fans, led by "Jimmy Savile" sang in unison at the Boxing Day test match. Absolutley brilliant. That tour is covered here in addition to many others starting with Australia 94/95,the recognised start of The Barmy Army.
Top tales include "Norfolk Graham" Barber staying in a Pakistan hotel for £6/week where each room came with a room cat to deal with the rats, mice and creepy crawlies! Also very amusing was Billy "the trumpet" losing his trumpet in a taxi then hearing it played at the test match ground. He approached the poor player struggling to get a note out and said "Hey, that's my trumpet". The other guy said "I found it in a taxi".
Tales of mixing with the players in various drinking establishments are included. But can anybody beat my story of being served in "The Ship" pub in Barbados and turning round to see Brian Lara behind me waiting to get served!
Highly recommended book. The only omission being no tales from India which hopefuly will be reported in a separate tome someday!

I've watched cricket for years, and observed the Barmy Army, largely from a distance. This book gives a glimpse of what it is like to be on tour with them, morning, noon and night. The tales are hilarious, and the England players' reactions a revelation!

Bought for my husband for a Christmas stocking filler. He is mad about his cricket and harbours secret ambitions to join the Barmy Army when we win the lottery. He liked the book but did think that it was rather repetitive in its anecdotes and was strung out to justify itself.
