This is the third in Sophia Johnson's Blackthorn trilogy and I think it's the best of the three. I would definitely advise that you read the first two books before this one in order to really know the background of the characters concerned: Always Mine Midnight's Bride
Meaghan loved Rolf once, but now he appears to want her only to serve his need for revenge against her family. His plan to make her his mistress until she bears him a son and then send her away without her child goes rather awry early on in the plot. However, is his new plan to handfast her any better?
I enjoyed the plot of this book. There is revenge, anger, romance, passion, secrets, betrayal and plenty of it. It's a well-written historical romance lead by the heroine, Meaghan; an unusual girl for her time. She's feisty, strong and fights as well if not better than many of the men. I enjoyed her efforts to stop Rolf from feminising her and his attempts to cut off his total adoration of her. The minor characters were also well-written and fairly leapt off the page.
I would highly recommend this book and the others in the series, although they don't quite match up to this one.
