Product Description

Review

'Drawing from their vast experience in making classical music available, Mssrs. Henley and Jackson have crafted a thoroughly enjoyable work that is of value both to the newcomer to classical music as well as the more seasoned aficionado. They approach the subject with both a love of music and a strong awareness of the reluctance many people have to become involved with this musical form ... a relaxed, informative, and eminently enjoyable introduction to the field of classical music.' ---- Donald F Calbreath, New York Journal of Books

Product Description

Just what exactly is classical music ...and why should it be a part of everyone's life? Who are the big names behind the classical hits ...and which are the best recordings of their music? What are you supposed to wear to a classical concert ...and when on earth are you supposed to applaud? 'Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Classical Music ...But Were Too Afraid to Ask' answers these questions and much more. In the pages of this book, Darren Henley and Sam Jackson set out to make the classical world not only accessible, but also disarmingly simple and utterly engrossing, as they share their passion for the greatest music ever written. Celebrating 20 years of the world's most successful classical music radio station, this book lifts the lid on the burning questions that Classic FM's listeners have most often asked over the past two decades. Three sections steer you through the terminology and etiquette of classical music, open the fascinating history of the genre and its key figures over the last 1,000 years, and provide a detailed reference guide. Since its transmitters were first switched on in 1992, the team behind Classic FM has believed that classical music can and should be a part of everyone's life, no matter who they are or where they live. So, whether you are a long-time listener or completely new to the genre this book equips you to begin your own personal journey of discovery into the world's greatest music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classical book review 20 Jun 2012

Having dabbled, bought Cds, gone to concerts and listened to Classical FM as quite a novice to classical music but throughly captivated by it this book was a really good way to get a bit deeper and gain further background and understanding. Even for me some parts were more basic than I expected but overall I found it a good read and well worth the outlay.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good listening tool... 6 Aug 2012

To the question:'Should any novice interested in classical music purchase this book?' the answer would be a definite 'Yes'. A great deal of concise information is included in this quick reference book even if a lot more is missing. We are not talking about digesting an encyclopedia here: reading this book is like using a road map i.e. spotting landmarks at a glance without wasting time on the tourist sites to visit. This type of information can be gleaned later at a leisurely pace and as the mood takes you. Overall, a great enjoyable acquisition, which will undoubtedly lead me to many more relating to the diving realm of classical music.

Brilliant book bought for my son-in-law. He now listens to classic fm and understands more about the words and information that is spoken about.

Easy to read, good reference book and lots of very intesting facts about the composers.
