Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The music scene in Senegal is a vibrant one that includes such international stars as Youssou N'Dour, Orchestra Baobab, and Cheikh Lô. Singer/guitarist/producer Wasis Diop is on that elevated list as well. The reason for it is readily apparent on this greatest hits collection Everything Is Never Quite Enough. Here we get one new song (opener "Le Passeur") and 18 other tunes culled from No Sant (What's Your Name), Toxu, and his soundtrack to the movie Hyenes. Not an artist for the African music purist, Diop creates a modern multi-layered sound that skilfully weaves in elements of jazz, rock and soul as well as indigenous music from other countries. It's the polar opposite of a field recording, but the fusion is nonetheless a skilful one. One does wonder why Diop's first album in five years is a collection of old material, but this is a fine and readily available stopgap while we're waiting. --Tad Hendrickson, Amazon.com

I know the title of this review my be a little odd for a male vocalist, but that is how I can sum up Wasis Diop's voice. This is the first album that I have bought by him, but I am already sure it won't be the last. I first heard of him through a compliation album, and heard African Dream, which he sings with Lena Fiagbe, and this one track is worth buying the album for in its self!
For those of you who don't know Wasis Diop's music let me try and round it up. I know it is said about many artists, but this guy truely is eceltic. He hails from West Africa (Senegal I believe) and lived in Paris, and he has been around for many years, but only recently started to be heard in Britain. His music is accustic (well a little electric guitar here and there). It's kind of soulful, jazz, African and French, if that makes sense. My favourite tracks include the song from which the album got it's name Everything, and African Dream, Dune, and Holaal bu baah, are also very worthy. Nineteen songs in total, so well worth your money! Give it a try.

I bought his album "Toxu" (1998) and fell so much in love with his music that I had to buy more albums. This is my second and I love it even more than "Toxu". Most lyrics I don't understand since it is in Wolof, but it doesn't matter. The music and the voice are enough in itself. I play it over and over and I can't get enough, it fills my body and heart with such a good feeling. Love it and recommend it heartily.

Great world music! 1 Sep 2004

I first heard "Everything is not quite enough" on KUNC. So glad I got this album. It far exceeded my expectations. The rhythms, harmonies, sentiment and CREATIVITY are tops. Plus you get some French and African. It is a really lovely, upbeat album.
