Review

This book is a huge celebration of life and how we can in simple ways enrich our days ... I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel happier, more fulfilled and increasingly to enjoy the world around them. (Jilly Cooper)

A beautiful collection of short essays which act as a spiritual and emotional first-aid kit. (The Guardian)

Lesley Garner has produced the perfect bedside book for those nights when you can't sleep and it's too late to call a friend... (You magazine)

She writes like a dream... she is always wise, perceptive and utterly original (Daily Mail)

Superb (The Independent)

An elegantly written 'emotional first aid kit' to help in those dark moments when life just gets a bit much. (Stylist Magazine 2010-09-08)

An inspirational collection of ideas distilled from years of experience, this new edition of Garner's invigorating book is thoroughly welcome...an eclectic, energizing pot-pourri of practical and philisophical ideas ideal for anyone seeking equilibrium. (The Good Book Guide 2010-09-01)

I've read lots of self help books, at times when life seems to have disintegrated and I've lost my way. None have helped as much as this one. It's partly to do with the language: it's simple but not patronising, clear without being didactic and personal not detached. But it's also a catalogue of some very basic resources for re-orientating yourself, tapping into inner resources or getting a new perspective, that many of us have overlooked. Some of these things are as simple as sitting under a tree, walking barefoot or talking to someone who can help you see your life differently.

It hasn't changed my life yet, because I've only just finished it, but I think it's going to!

Take what you want from this book. You probably won't want to follow all of her suggestions, but there are many sensible ones which will enhance your day to day existence. It is quick and easy to read and there are references to other useful resources.
Key ideas include simple meditations, expressing gratitude, and forgiveness and taking note of what has worked for you- being your own resource.

This is a fantastic little book that you can dip into anytime and get some inspiration. I found the realisation that accomplished people like Lesley struggle as much with the day to day issues everyone else faces reassuring and inspiring. Somehow one tends to think of successful people as being more gifted than one's self. Lesley's candid observations about her own life, however, makes one realise it's not what you've got but the way that you use it that really counts.

The chapters are short but there is great wisdom contained in every one. It's a great little pick me up if you're feeling at all weighed down.

Well worth buying!

I've not read Lesley Garner's work before this one but now I'm going to have read all. I loved the combination of practical advice, personal experience and psychology/spiritual theories that make up every chapter in this book. Covering most of the everyday anxieties I really enjoyed how simple she makes it to get to grips with what's really important and let the rest go.

I bought this as a gift, having got an earlier edition for myself. It is wonderful to read when you have run out of ideas, or maybe it is too late (or early) to phone a friend. You can dip in and find a new take on navigating life's ups and downs, big and small. Great to have on the bedside table.

Just wanted to say that I'm glad I have this book - it lives in my downstairs loo - and as several reviewers have said the stories are short but always make me feel better than I did before. Thanks Lesley.
