5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of delights!!, 22 May 2007
By D. Thompson "tommo" (leeds) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Im giving this 5 stars for 2 reasons -

1 - its a great listen, with varied styles throughout
2 - there are just under 40 tracks for a bargain price - mostly by bands I have never heard of and will now be checking out.

Its really good to hear how many bands have been influenced by pavement and how their sound compares to that of Pavement themsleves.

If you like your music accessible but just that little bit quirky then you will find a number of songs an absolute joy on this. Some are quite straightforward covers, not sounding alarmingly different from the original, (but enjoyable nonetheless).

the best bits being C-kids cover of 'in the mouth a desert' - a minimalist, electro approach to the cover.

If you though Shady lane was little odd in the first instance then listen to solex's version which sounds like a high ptiched japenese pop song speeded up!

'Here' is a pavement classic and gets the treatment 3 times - the tinderstciks version being, well typically the tindersticks - there is no challenge to the sticks on this one - i would like to have seen them attempt something a little different to their mumdane sombre territory.

the cover of 'Here' by Number one cup - is much more interesting with the vocal spoils split between both male and female singers - both sounding as frail and delicate as each other.

Magoo's version of 'perfume v' rocks itself through to the sing-a-long chorus until it then unexpectadly slows down and they sing through the chorus at a very slow pace until it picks up at the verse again.

The cover by Tiger Wood of 'elevate me later' - flips the original from being a glorious collection of harmonies and chiming guitars to being a soft dream like melody.

There is also some staple Indie stuff on here to like the covers by Saloon, Garlic, Julies Haricut and Elgoodo - which are all great to listen to, but what makes it really interesting are the above covers that change the originals around bit and throw in something unexpected.

This is a not only a great buy for Pavement fans but also one for any fans of Indie/alternative music as it has so many little treats to discover in different styles. And it also reminds you what a great band pavement were - and despite their LO=Fi, alternative, cult status how many bloody great songs they wrote and how inanely catchy their songs are....

Highly reccommended.
