Product Description

50 tracks in a deluxe 2CD rigid digibook set featuring the New Orleans legend's solo recordings plus his greatest production hits for Lee Dorsey, The Meters, Ernie K. Doe and more. This collection covers 20 years of his remarkable career, beginning with his first appearances on record as a session pianist, his first solo recordings in 1958 under the name Al Tousan and ends in the '70s with his timeless songs and productions for artists like Lee Dorsey and The Meters. In between we'll hear the original versions of songs that he wrote and/or produced that later became famous in versions by The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Herman's Hermits, The Dave Clark Five, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.

A four- rather than five-star review here isn't based on any assessment of the music. The music throughout is fantastic, being witty, warm, laid-back, sexy and insanely funky at all times, and molecules of concentrated funk will permeate your dwelling long after you've finished playing it. And "Vision On" fans of a certain age will go into a nostalgic gumbo of pleasure as "Java" appears over the horizon.

I've dropped a star because I can't quite get my head round the sequencing. The first disc is essentially solo recordings by Toussaint, or, as another reviewer noted, sessions where he's pretending to be Fats Domino, in chronological order. The second disc concentrates on his writer-producer efforts for others, again in chronological order, and will probably create more pleasure for most people than the first, because it's more diverse and there's more vocals on it. Both, however, are worth their weight in gold.

But they don't sit well together for this listener. They're too different to make for a unified package, so it seems to be slightly lacking in identity (this is relative, of course: it has far more identity than at least 90% of all the other music you could buy from Amazon). But this is more a criticism of my addled and aging noggin than of the item itself.

It's an essential purchase anyway, because Toussaint is a hugely under-rated figure by the world at large and there's not enough of his great legacy readily and conveniently available. There's also plenty more where this came from, so let's hope Charly are already digging in the goldmine for volume two.

This 2 CD 50 tracker of Allen Toussaint's career as both a writer/producer and recording artist in his own right begins in the 50s with Fats Domino (when he depped for him) to Lee Dorsey in the late 60s with along the way tracks from his albums made under the name of Al Toussan and the Stokes to his work on the Minit label before founding his own imprints and is as comprehensive a collection as you could expect.
Since the 60s Toussaint has had even more success via covers of his songs like Southern Nights (Glen Campbell),input on the Wings album Venus & Mars and lately a collaboration with Elvis Costello and the posthumous hit by Ernie K-Doe Here comes the girls-used on a Boots commercial for an ongoing campaign

YES HE CAN CAN 24 Sep 2013
By Jukebox Dave - Published on Amazon.com
ALLEN TOUSSAINT-THE ALLEN TOUSSAINT STORY: Subtitled EVERYTHING I DO GONH BE FUNKY-THE HIT SONGS AND PRODUCTIONS 1957-1978, THE ALLEN TOUSSAINT STORY tracks fifty pop and RNB classics from the most prolific multi-tasker in the history of New Orleans music. Disc one concentrates on the songwriter/producer/arranger/pianist's early groups ALLEN & ALLEN and THE STOKES, whose peppy instrumental versions of JAVA and WHIPPED CREAM were templates for the AL HIRT and HERB ALPERT smashes. The second platter trots out a veritable treasure trove of freewheeling gems such as THE SHOWMEN's rock & roll tribute IT WILL STAND, ERNIE K-DOE's joyous put down MOTHER IN LAW and LEE DORSEY's hearty WORKING IN A COAL MINE and HOLY COW, not to mention solid sides from THE METERS, IRMA THOMAS and AARON NEVILLE. Much of this material was covered by admirers like the THE STONES, THE YARDBIRDS, ROBERT PALMER, THE FLESHTONES and DEVO, pointing to TOUSSAINT's indelible influence on the rock and roll crowd...his rich, soulful legacy offering truly something for everyone.

If you liked New Orleans Funk 26 Sep 2014

Having been turned on to Allen Toussaint and New Orleans music in general by the excellent Soul Jazz New Orleans Funk series, I was practically tearing down walls to hear more of the guy's productions. Everything he touched on the New Orleans Funk compilations (which, according to the accompanying liner notes, seemed to about half the city's total musical output) was pure gold, and these were just the rare tracks, not the classics. Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky... is probably the most comprehensive and best value collection of Toussaint's work on the market. Like the New Orleans Funk collections, it's also a great introduction to a great number of excellent, sorely underrated, talented singers/groups from one of the US's musical hotspots. But more than anything, these two discs simply make for an outstandingly fabulous listening experience.
