Book Description

15 Nov 2011

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy 7 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Just finished reading this - it was the first book to necessitate downloading the Kindle app for my iPhone and buying the ebook version because for some reason the UK shipping for the hard copy was 1-3 months, but worked out well as the audio extras are a fun touch. The essays cover a wide range of Mindy Kaling's thoughts, observations, and insights and is written in a conversational way that makes you feel like you are chatting to a friend. A really funny, interesting, smart friend. Too many highlights to mention, although I will say that the chapter "Guys Need to Do Almost Nothing to Be Great" should be gospel. I guess as Bossypants only came out earlier this year the Tina Fey comparisons will be inevitable. There are a few similarities, the most important being that both books make you laugh and feel happy. Who wouldn't want to have more books like that?

3.0 out of 5 stars It's alright, but it does have it's faults. 9 Nov 2012

I've read a lot of 'funny girl' memoirs recently, with the likes of Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman coming out on top, and Ellen Degeneres coming out on the bottom. Where dies Mindy Kailing fit? I'd say somewhere in the middle.

Mindy isn't someone I know a lot about, I know she writes and stars on the American version of 'The Office', but I fell behind on that halfway through it's run and never caught up. All I remember of her charcater is that she was obsessed with the intern and supplied the odd stalker-inspired laugh every few episodes or so, so I came into this book not sure what to expect.

The book is funny (in places), but has a tendency to discuss topics that have already been covered, usually by much more accomplished comedians. Chapters basically relate to the 'I was the fat girl in high school' trope, or the 'I moved to New York and it was amazing' cliche. While not original, I'm not saying these chapters aren't funny, they can be and are, but it would have been nice to get some more interesting essays from her life, instead of the ones she's just deemed the most ripe for comedy value.

If there is one pet peeve about this book I have, it's the lists. It seemed as if whenever she couldn't think of a headline for another chapter, she would just chuck in a list of say 'The Top Ten Funniest Comedy Moments' or something, which basically equates to her talking and describing movies you've already seen, and then explaining why they're funny. It just felt like unnecessary padding to make the book longer.

Overall, a somewhat funny book with faults, but good enough that I'll probably check out another book if she writes one, or possibly watch her new show, 'The Mindy Project'.

The real question I've been left with after reading all these funny comedienne's books is, 'Where the hell is Amy Poehler's book?' I demand that she get on this trend right now.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, but come on. £16 list price? 25 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm a big fan of The Office and pretty fond of Mindy Kaling, so I was pretty happy to hear she'd written a book. And a lovely book it is too - nothing serious but genuinely entertaining and funny. It helps if the voice you use to read in your head is Kelly Kapoor's.

But then... How on earth is this book, which you can breeze through in a day or so, worth the £16 digital list price? Amazon are selling it for around £11, which is less, but still way too much.

This book is very heavy going. If you had told me that it was written by a narcissistic fourteen year old girl I would have believed it completely. Read more
