5.0 out of 5 stars A an excellent introduction 19 July 2003
By A Customer
I found the book was an excellent exposure for a first time learner of Indonesian or Malay. The book addresses the day to day use of the langauge and that which you really need to live and breath survival Indonesian.
I went to Indonesia for a month shortly after recieving the book, it made my journey and travel within the country almost independent.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stuck in the middle 14 Jun. 2000
By Renee Thorpe - Published on
This is bigger and harder to use than a phrasebook, but too small to be a real course in Behasa Indonesia. It works reasonably well as a cultural lesson, though.
I would prefer more drills (substitution exercises, etc), helping me to really get fluent by making up my own sentences. The prefixes appendix is pretty good, but is not set up in a visually helpful table form.
As a phrasebook, it is difficult to use when faced with an immediate need (you've hopped into a taxi on a busy street, or you're not sure what the rambutan seller in the market has just asked you in the middle of a transaction). Not only is it just too darn big for your pocket, but there are no handy fill-in-the-blank common phrases and questions.
Two very nice features of this book: 1) it is illustrated with many photos of smiling Indonesians, an effective little trick to make the reader remember to relax and smile more. 2)Every chapter is chock-a-block with interesting advice about the culture, food, manners, and so on.
Glossary is not bad, but not very complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction 19 July 2003
By A Customer - Published on
I felt the book provides an excellent exposure to the first time learner. The book is structured well with sections outlining the use of the language on a day to day situations, such as shopping eating out travelling etc.
The book avoids the need to learn long and tedious list of words and phrases.
I visited Indonesia shortly after recieving the book, I could travel quite independently without having concerns about communicating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyday Indonesian book 7 Jun. 2012
By ronplaysguitar2 - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not only is this a GREAT book to learn basic Indonesian vocabulary, grammar, and basic "survival" phrases/sentences, but it was also at a great price! The book was in excellent condition and had no writing in the text. (It took 1 week for the book to ship from California to Phoenix, which was too long.) My only regret is that I did not order the book sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful for the beginning Bahasa Indonesia student 10 Dec. 2011
By Natalie - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found Everyday Indonesian very useful and well-organized. The format was clear and the cultural notes and photos were helpful. Appendix A on "Verb and Noun Affixes" was worth the price of the book. It clearly explains the prefixes and suffixes which are confusing for beginners. Although the book was written in 1992, it clearly has resonated with Bahasa learners as this is the 8th printing (2007). Note: my July 2007 edition, which I recently bought, has a different cover.
5.0 out of 5 stars The best of breed for this language, despite being a one-off 6 Sept. 2013

In terms of the balance between cultural notes, grammar explanations and vocab build, with useful dictionaries at the back, this book beats in my opinion the other teach yourself books for Indonesian. This person really shows TY and Colloquial the proper way to do it. Could be improved with an audio section, of course. It's not really a phrasebook and dictionary but an actual language course and at basic level going up to about 1200 words. It sells itself short by saying it is a Phrasebook and it oversells itself by saying you will speak Indonesian effortlessly in a few hours as clearly it takes more than a few hours to process a 200 page language course, but if one overlooks these descriptive flaws it is a good book and also the illustrations are helpful and interesting. They are all in black and white and the book does betray signs of having been written more than 20 years ago, but these are minor quibbles.
